Jess looks at me in a sort of awe that I would actually try to pull something like that off. Me? I'm not surprised at all.
I've done it before, for four months even. And that included without eye contact. This, I just need to keep my thumbs and fingers off the darn keyboard until school starts. In 20 days. Only a little less than a month.
Not even off every keyboard! Just the keyboard that allows me to text Wilson, the ignored.
(I think I was trying to convince myself more than trying to tell a story.)
Then of course, the fog of doubt crosses my brain, clouding up my mind until I have to say something.
(Oh honey. That fog of doubt was already clouding up your brain fifteen minutes ago!)
"Do you think I'm actually going to do it?" I ask Jessica, curious to know her input. She thinks for a moment before shrugging and answering my question.
"Well, if you do, then you'll be Superwoman," she laughs. I laugh, too, but I am unconvinced. This would be harder than ignoring that other kid. I hated the other kid before I started ignoring him. With Wilson, it's a totally different story.
(Well, figuratively speaking. It's still in the same book.)
Then I realize, she didn't answer the question.
Well, if you do...
That little two letter word shows doubt. Doubt that I can pull this thing off. She's just too nice to say something about it.
Ten minutes later a buzzing can be heard from her phone, probably a text, probably from Wilson, probably him complaining, about me. She reads whatever the text says and smiles, amused. I narrow my eyes and look at her suspiciously, waiting for her to tell me what the deal is. She flips her phone over and gives it to me.
Wilson: Tell renee to not be a bully!!
(I was right!)
I laugh as she takes her phone back and replies. Knowing my best friend like I do, she'll probably have some sort of witty or sarcastic reply. After replying and apparently getting a text back, she hands her phone back to me, the amused smile still ever present on her face.Jessica: Capitalize her name and you think that's going to work
Wilson: Renee :(
(I was right! Again! Such a witty reply! Love ya, Jess.)
Thinking back on it, that's one of the most depressing and desperate things I have ever read. It's also pretty funny. Jess's words, not mine.
I look at Jess and laugh.
"Ask him why he wants to talk to me so badly," I laugh and hand her back the phone. No real answer would be given, but it's worth a shot. I've tried it before, I know.
"Um, okay," she shrugs and types away.
Once she replies, we watch the intro to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies over and over and over again until the repeated music drives Jess crazy. She doesn't get a response until half an hour later.
During this time, we watch random YouTube videos on my phone. But when she gets the response, she jumps at the spontaneous buzzing. She reads it and hands it to me.
Jess: Why do you want to talk to her so badly
Wilson: Helps the whole insomnia thing
