Chapter Six

I walked back to my room, Adam close behind me. A feeling of dread was hanging over both of us. Seeing the competition made us both doubt ourselves.

"See you tommorrow, Skylar." Adam said, ducking into his door. "Yeah, see you." I quickly shut the door to my room.

I should be nice to him. He saved my life once. But, at the same time, I know I will have to kill him. I refuse to be friendly towards him. If I be friendly, he'll be friendly, then we'll be friends. And I can't kill my friends.

I change into some red pajamas and hop in the bed. I don't think sleep will be easy to come by. Yet, as soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm dead asleep.

The next morning, I reluctantly get up and change into jeans and a dark green shirt. I brush out my hair, and go out the main room.

When I get there, Adam and Anna(what is up with me and A's???) are already at the table, having a seemingly interesting conversation. I step through the sliding door, and head for the table, hungry for breakfast.

"-yeah, but then I'd shoot him through the heart." "Well, what if there's two?" Adam and Anna are so deep into their conversation, they don't even notice me. "What's going on?" I ask. Anna looks up at me, and sighs. "Oh, goody. Why don't you join us." She says sarcastically. "I was asking what to do if I'm being chased." Adam says, calmly. "What do you do?" I ask, turning to face Anna. As I look at her, I find her asleep, her head on her empty plate.

Adam snorts, and even I have to hold in laughter at the sight of our mentor, passed out on the table. "I guess she didn't get a lot of sleep last night." Adam laughs. "Yeah, guess not." I stand, and find a cup of ice cold water. "Wait, what are you doi-" Before Adam can finish, I dump the freezing water on her face. She instantly pops up, swearing. She catches sight of me holding in my laughter and the glass, and her face turns pink. "Did I fall asleep?" She asks. "Maaaaaaaaayyybe." Adam responds. We look at each other, silent at first, and burst out laughing.

"Very funny. I'm gonna eat in my room." Anna grumbles, grabs her plate, and stalks off to her room.

"She's probably ready to kill you." Adam says. "Yeah, well. It's gonna happen in the next month anyway." Adam stops laughing, and looks me straight in the eye. "Don't talk about it that way. You have much of a chance of winning as I do."

He makes it sound like he wants to protect me. Well, I don't know if he knows this, but I have as much of a chance of winning as a bunny does.

"Listen, Adam, I'm going to die in that arena. I have no fighting skill at all, and nobody's going to remember me, which leads to no sponsors. I'll be dead in less than a week." I storm off to my room.

Even with the promise I made to my dad, I know that there's no way of me getting out of that arena alive. Adam must know that.

I plop down on the bed, wondering what to do now. Instead of actually doing something, I bury my head in my pillow and cry. I will never get to see my home again. Never see my mother or father again. No, I will being dying for the Capitol's sick entertainment. How riveting.

The thought of it makes me so sick I literally almost puke. I don't want to die for the Capitol. Yet I know I will. There's no other way out of it, except for surviving the arena, and I already know that's impossible. Tears were starting to run down my face.

The tears have just stopped when I hear a knock on my door. "Coming." I say. I quickly dry my tears, and put a look of stone on my face before I open the door. I find Adam standing in the doorframe, looking concerned.

"Hey, are you okay? After you stormed out, I wasn't sure if you were alright.."

"Adam, we're heading into a competition where we have to kill people. I'm all sunshine and rainbows." My voice is thick with sarcasm, but Adam laughs.

"Well, come on. We're almost at the Capitol. You won't want to miss the view, according to Julio." He walks away from the door, and I follow him close behind. No matter how much I hate the place, there's always been a little piece of me that has wanted to see it in person.

"There it is." Adam breathes, and is at the window in seconds. "Oh my god, it's huge. That's incredible." He says.

I move slowly over to the window, and I see it. Adam wasn't lying. It is huge. Yet, at the same time, it is menacing.

Tall, multi-colored buildings sat in neat rows through the streets. Even though we had to be at least two hundred miles away, I could see long cars rolling down the streets. In the center, I could spot a large mansion, probably the president's, and the Training Center.

I could see the Capitol for about ten seconds, when the light disappeared from the windows. We were in some kind of tunnel.

I stared out the window, curious to see where we would end up.

Suddenly, a blinding light entered the train, and I took a step back. My eyes slowly adjusted to the light, and I stared out the window again.

There were hundreds. Hundreds of Capitol people dressed in clothes so bright, they gave me a slight headache. They were cheering. I stole a glance at Adam. He was waving at the crowd, smiling widely.

Then, the truth dawned on me. These people can't wait for the Games. They can't wait for the deaths of 23 innocent lives.

They are cheering for my blood.
