Chapter Twenty-Two

I bolted through the arena, pushing past pine needles that scratched my hands as I shoved them away.

I couldn't let Tiffany die. No way. I knew that all districts would be tuned in now, since tensions were definitley high as I ran for my ally.

I figured that there were probably some people in the Capitol betting to see if I would get there in time- heck, they probably already knew. All eyes can't be on me, all eyes must be on the girl from Four who's headed for Tiffany. I wonder what happened to her District Partner. Is he on the Careers, off on his own, or with his own alliance?

I knew that the girl from Four probably figured I was dead, from the cannon going off. It's hard to see the faces in the sky amidst all these trees.

My hopes raised. If she thinks I'm dead, she won't expect me to creep up on her. She'll let her guard down.

And a lowered guard means a higher chance for me.

I skidded to a stop, almost slipping on the snow and falling, and looked around.

Where was the cave?

I got my answer as a scream pierced through the cold air, chilling my blood.

Tiffany.

I raced toward the sound of the scream, which wasn't that hard, considering that it kept going.

What could inflict a scream like that?

Scratch that, I don't want to know.

I spot the cave in the distance, and hide behind a bush close to it.

The girl from Four is right outside our cave, her back turned toward me.

I get one shot at this.

I grasp the handle of my knife, aim for the head, and throw.

It hits just north of where I aimed it, but it's enough. She falls, and then cannon goes off.

That just might of been my luckiest shot yet.

I duck into the cave, and there she is.

 I almost pass out.

There's a sword stuck in her side.

"Pretty bad, huh?" She smiles weakly, as if it's painful to do even that, which it probably is.

"N-no. It'll be fine. We can get it out."

"No you can't." She says. "It's okay, really. I always knew I wasn't coming back."

"Stop it." I say, because I can't afford to cry, not in the Games.

"Hey, this is going to sound cliche, but when you make it out of here, would you tell Mario that I love him, and I'll see him soon, but hopefully not too soon?"

"I think he just heard you." I say, and a tear slips down her face.

"Yeah, I guess he did. And by the way, you were a pretty good ally."

"Thanks. You too." I smile sadly.

She looks up at the ceiling. "In a way, I'm glad. I'm escaping the Games for good. I'll finally be safe." She says.

"Safe and sound." I say, and the cannon goes off.

And I can't help it. I cry until there can't be another tear in me.

Tiffany was supposed to go home.

Suddenly, I can't stand to be in the cave another second. Not where Tiffany's dead and I didn't make in time to help.

I slowly collect everything we had in the cave that could be useful, stand, and leave the cave.

I'm alone now.
