"Carry the 1, then you have 6! And that's the answer!" Andrew exclaimed.
"Yeah no, I don't really get this. Can I go back to reading, please?" I begged as I closed my textbook.
"Uh, no. You have a quiz on this tomorrow don't you? And you asked for my help so I'm helping you, study!" Andrew answered and reopened my textbook.
I would much rather read right now than deal with math. I'm not very good at it. I like science though and I might want to become a scientist but that requires math so I might not. Andrew is right though, I have got a math quiz tomorrow on fractions or something? Hopefully I'll know before midnight tonight.
"Alright, we've been at this for an hour, take a break. Watch some TV or something." Andrew said, leaning back in his chair with defeat.
"Well actually I want to talk. Talk about the president's kid coming to our school. Max Altman? Wonder why he wanted to come to our school." I pondered.
"Well, our school is a pretty decent school and I mean, what's there to talk about? The son of the new president is coming to our school and we're praying to God that's he's not as stuck up or egotistical as his father. I still don't know how President Altman won the election anyways." Andrew said as he shrugged. I chuckled at the thought of a mini President Altman walking around in the hallways.
"Well I don't think that his son is much like the President. Whenever you see the First Family on TV, he's kind of in the background, usually wanting to get out of the shot of the camera. I was watching him yesterday when we were watching the news in Homeroom." I argued.
"Yeah that is true. I think he's arriving on Monday. Now we've had our break, back to math."
"Fine." I grumbled.
Next day
"So which painting is from the Union point of view and which is from the Confederate point of view?" Asked Mrs. Peters.
A girl with long blonde hair and green eyes raised her hand among some others.
"Judy?"
"The one on the right is Confederate and the one on the left is Union." Judy explained.
"Care to elaborate? Anyone?" Mrs. Peters asked.
I was reading The Martian for the 2nd time to celebrate being done with my math quiz, but also because I was bored and was right at the part when Mark retrieved the Pathfinder and was trying to figure out how to work it when...
" May? Do you mind sticking your head out of that book and answering my question?" Mrs. Peters said, one eyebrow up.
I was startled when she called my name so reluctantly I put my book down and looked at the two civil war paintings.
"Uh sure." I answered. The paintings were both pretty clear. One of them was Yankees next to a wall with a cannon or two and guns with anger and I guess a heroic look on their faces. Then the artist had light shining on their faces and darker colours over the other side of the wall on the field. So that's obviously Union.
" Ok, so the one on the left is Union cause of the light shining on the soldiers faces in the blue uniforms. Also, they supposedly look heroic as they aim their guns toward the other side of the field." I said.
"Thank you, May. Anyone else like to try to figure out the other one?" Mrs. Peters inquired.
I released a breath of relief that she didn't ask me to do the next one cause the southern one was harder and also I wanted to get back to my book. Mrs. Peters doesn't really mind that I read in class, as long as I know what's going on.
Some other kid talked about the next painting and Mrs. Peters was pretty content with all of our answers.
"Alright, pack up your stuff ladies and gentlemen, the bell is about to ring."
I put my world studies folders, my planner and my book back in my backpack.
"Hold on one second class, I've got one last thing to tell you. We're going to be assigned a project next class about different reforms from the 1800s, examples are women's rights, education reform, etc."
Wait a minute, we're on the civil war unit right now, we already learned about these reforms. Why are we having a project about it now?
"Wait Mrs. Peters, we already learned about that? Why are we having this project now?"
Exactly my point.
"Because this is a test to see how much you remember," Mrs. Peters declared as she winked. "And also because the history department was having trouble with the layout of the project, but that's not the main focus of this."
Great, now I have to remember everything I learned in this class last month!
"Class dismissed," Mrs. Peters said as the bell rang.
I pick up my backpack and walk out the door into the hallway. The hallways are filled with kids as we all make our way toward the door. It's the end of the day and I for one am very grateful because I am done with math and can now read my book.
I head out the door onto the sidewalk and wait for my bus to arrive. It's Friday, it's the weekend, and on Monday, Max Altman is coming.
Hope that this chapter isn't too short! All I know is that I haven't updated this story in forever so here you go! Hope you like it!
