"You can run, run as fast as you can and get out of there!" Mother says gripping onto my shoulders and shaking me harshly making my head swing back and forth. I winced at the chillness in her voice. My mind resurfaced to another world while I let my eyes wander to the ground. My black pumps scraped across the exquisite velvet carpet that sat underneath of a grand piano, mini bar and a dusty worn couch.
"Don't trust anybody! Remember to cover any wounds you have. If it's a jungle, banana leafs help heal burns. Always saturate any water you digest with iodine and-". I peer out into the small squared window. Capitol citizens are being directed by Peacekeepers to evacuate the premises. The corner of all the citizen's mouths are inched up into a little smirk. They are happy, letting out sighs of relief as they cherishing their children with long bear hugs and soft kisses to the foreheads.
At exactly seven o' clock, my neighbors will feast with the finest foods imported straight from the Districts. Seared Basin topped with steamed Scallops sided with a Baked Dijon Salmon wedges, and a heaping bowl of Cajun Seafood Medley from District 4. A Stuffed Hen, a sizzling Filet Mignon, and Lamb chops with Chevre goat cheese on the side are just a few of the many meals to select from District 10. Fresh maple sap from District 7 to drizzle on buttery honey Crescents from District 11. All served on elegant priceless fine china from District 1. My favorite dish growing up was the Sirloin Steaks, they cut just like butter. But all of these foods are for families who've survived the reapings this year, not for the ones who's children were reaped into the Games.
"Are you listening to me?" She angrily says. One tear drop swims down my mother's rosy cheeks, then another. I wait until she's sobbing with snot dripping from her nose. I hesitantly let her rest her damp face into my neck. She occasionally parted her mouth open to let out a grieving moan. I pat her back and whisper into her ears that it is not her fault.
"Ellaydra!" she screams bringing her head up.
I'm puzzled. "What about her?"
"I knew she was going to be a bad example since the day she came out my sister's woumb, I should've broken up you guy's relationship when I had the chance, if only you had not volunteered for her Avalon, we wouldn't be in this hard predicament."
"Oh mom!" I exclaim hugging her. "I had to, I couldn't let her go in alone."
"Alone?" She repeats angrily. "There will be thirty-five other tributes, and only one survives, someone is bound to end up alone at the end!"
"I know Ma'!" I say. "But Ellaydra will protect me, really. She's going to make sure I'm this year's Victor!"
"And you believe her? This is Ellaydra we're talking about, the girl who's been stealing from her mother since she can walk, the girl who punched a Peacekeeper in his face, the girl who made you rob the pawn shop on seventy fourth street, the girl-"
"Okay mom! I get it, Ellaydra isn't always the most trustworthy person, even if she sabotages me, I have Mason with me." I say in hopes of convincing her that I'll be perfectly fine in the arena.
"Mason Corduroy?"
"Yes," I quietly mumble.
"You have better luck winning with on of the twelve year old's, baby cakes, Mason isn't the brightest tribute in the bunch."
"But he's strong!" I say trying to make a point.
"Strength can only get you so far in the Games dear."
Strength can only get you so far in the Games dear. She's right. Xander, Slade, Dazzle, and all the other Tributes with such great experience in weaponry and fighting skills won't make it far in the Games with their little knowledge of edible plants and shelter remedies. Mother always drills these things in Dino, Sylvista and I head's. She wanted us to be prepared just in case one of does get reaped. Who knew it would actually happen.
