Chapter 5: Lily
I breathed a sigh of relief as Zach sat up slowly. We had arrived at the safe house and I had gone to wake up Zach, but he wouldn’t wake up and was groaning in pain. The bite marks in his neck were inflamed and oozing blood and a clear liquid I hoped was her venom was being expelled from the wound. It had only just occurred to me that she had bitten him and injected her poison into him. I backed up to give him some space and he looked around confused.
“Where are we?”
“We’re at the safe house. We arrived almost 10 minutes ago. You’ve been out for over 5 hours.” He was pale, but his wound had finally stopped oozing and looked less red and he stood up slowly on his own.
“Where’s Sasha?” He asked, looking around with a perplexed expression. I blushed. I had been so worried about him that I hadn’t even checked on her. Not that I would ever admit that to him though.
“She’s still in the back.” He nodded and we walked over to the back. Jamie walked over next to me and I positioned him behind me as Zach opened the trunk of the hummer. Sasha hung there, her whole body limp. She tensed up suddenly and Zach jumped back as she opened her eyes and looked around confused. I relaxed when I saw that her eyes were their usual indigo.
“What’s going on? What happened?” Her voice was panicked as she looked around and realized she was chained in the back of the car.
“That’s what we were wondering. Care to enlighten us as to why you attacked us and nearly killed me?” Zach said, his voice tight with anger. Sasha froze then sucked in a sharp breath.
“Let me down and I’ll tell you everything. Please.” Her eyes were pleading and Zach turned to us, his face making it clear that he did not trust her. I nodded and he grudgingly took out the key to the chains, unlocking her as quickly as possible. I couldn’t help but notice that she wasn’t burning from the silver chains anymore. I shuddered. She wasn’t natural and even though I wasn’t one to talk, she was a freak even among other supernaturals. I had heard the stories, but I didn’t know which were true.
She dropped down to the floor of the car and rubbed her wrists and ankles. She hissed quietly as the circulation returned to her hands and feet. Even though she tried to kill us, it still sucks to have pins and needles I thought, rubbing my own wrist at the thought. Zach took a step towards her and gave her an impatient grunt. She looked at him annoyed and slowly sat up, holding the edge of the car for support.
“I don’t know what happened after I lost control, I never do, but you have to know that that wasn’t me.” She pleaded, her face miserable. I rolled my eyes. Sure she didn’t remember trying to eat anyone. I snorted quietly. Did she seriously think we would believe her?
“What do you mean you ‘never do’?” Zach crossed his arms and stared at her. Sasha blushed and looked down, her hands fidgeting and nervous.
“This isn’t the first time it’s happened. I haven’t lost control like that in almost a year and before you ask, I don’t know what triggered it. Normally I have to be really emotional or starving and I was neither. I’m sorry about whatever I did.” She hadn’t looked up from her hands. I noticed that she was holding the vial of whatever she had drunk.
“What is that?” I watched as her hand tightened over the vial and then slowly opened.
“It’s a rare tranquilizer called Noxisomnus. It’s one of the few things that can knock me out. I don’t know how he managed to get it though…” Her voice trailed off at the end and she stared at the bottle like it held all the answers. Jaime was staring at it too and I grabbed his hand, hoping he wouldn’t have a vision. He looked at me with his usual small smile and I squeezed his hand in return. Zach was shaking his head and pacing, muttering under his breath. He whirled around and stalked back over to Sasha, who was watching him with a dejected look.
“What are you?” His voice was almost a growl and his fists were clenched in tight fists. His eyes were glowing gold and his wings had appeared through his shirt, opalescent and shimmery.
“I don’t think you’re ready to know.” She was looking down once again, refusing to meet his stare. I knew enough about her to know that now was not the time for this. If she thought that Zach couldn’t handle the truth, then he couldn’t handle it. If it were possible, Zach seemed to get even angrier, his whole body taking on a golden glow.
“Zach, enough.” He whirled on me and I glared at him. We stood like that for a few moments before he eventually nodded and backed away from her. Sasha stood up slowly and frowned. She turned slowly, taking in the surroundings.
The safe house was a run down warehouse in the middle of an industrial park full of empty and deserted factories. The once-white paint was peeling, exposing the crumbling brick below. The hummer looked incredibly out of place in front of the neglected warehouse, and I would have been worried if we weren’t clearly the only people to ever set foot here in years.
The lock on the side door was sealed tight with rust, but Sasha just ripped it off the hinges. I have to say, I was expecting more of a COVEC safe house. The inside was just as dilapidated as the outside, the same brick and peeling paint. Zach flipped the light switch and after some buzzing protests, the lights flickered on. They were coated in dust, which leant a creepy yellow glow to the room. The windows were boarded with rotting planks with weak beams of light peeping through. Wooden crates were stacked up against the walls and broken machines lay in rusting heaps.
“Nice place.” My voice seemed to echo through the empty warehouse. Sasha ignored my sarcasm and walked over to one of the machines. She pulled a lever and the machine slid to the side.
“A secret door? Seriously?” Zach crossed his arms and I raised my eyebrow at him. I shook my head and walked over to the staircase leading down to a dark room.
“Hey Sasha, I don’t suppose there’s a light down there?” As if on cue, the lights turned on and we walked down. My jaw dropped as I took in the real safe house.
