She screamed, her cry echoed across the room, the country, the world. The Joker  advanced on her. Blade in hand, smile spreading his cheeks, she looked up at him, a tear slipping down the apple of her cheek.
He lifted his knife to her lip and Harley's movements stopped, she stared up at him, her eyes so wide, terror colouring her irises.
"Don't do it."
Her eyes begged, and for a moment he lowered the knife.

A tear of gratitude slipped from her eye and he watched it roll, suddenly growing angry with her, misunderstanding the tear to mean something else.

His hands grasped her shoulders in a death like clamp, he forced her back into her chair with a hard shove.
"Why so scared?" His forehead was touching hers eyes glaring into the abyss of hers, mouth open, he laughed.

Then he lifted his knife again.

"Why the... Waterworks." The point of the blade traced the teardrop, and he watched as she flinched away.

He brought the knife to the other side of her face, and traced a heart shape against her cheek bone.

"You said that you wanted to leave?" He whispered, all humour, all joking gone from his voice.
"Please."
"And where would you go?"
"I'd leave Gotham."
The joker laughed, then lowered the knife from her face to neck.
"Don't you get it?" He whispered into her ear.
"No one ever leaves Gotham."
He started laughing again, he turned away from her, then spun back narrowly missing her cheek with his blade.
"No one ever leaves me."

A small drop of blood grew from her cheek and the sight was maddening. He leant forward, lay a palm on her forehead and swiped his tongue across her cut as she shivered away.

"And if you left you'd always come back."
"No I wouldn't."
"Because you're weak, that's why."
"No I'm not."
"Oh yes you are my Harley Quinn, you are weak, and that is why you would come back."

She shook her head.

"How long would it take? A day, a week, and you'd be back, crawling back, because you're pathetic. So why bother leaving?"

She looked at him, at his face, the way he was moving, and his eyes, then she studied his voice, and what he was saying.

"You're scared." This time she didn't flinch when his knife was at her throat.
"You're terrified. Why?" He didn't respond.
"If you are so certain that my pathetic self will come back, why are you stopping me from leaving?" He ground his teeth and pressed the knife harder into her.

"I could kill you right now, and no one would stop me, no one would care, and you wanna know why?"
"You would care." Her words were biting and the Joker wanted to flinch away.
"Because you don't matter. Do you think that someone's going to cry if they found your body on a corner? That someone will look into it? No, they'll just see your costume and laugh."

"Then kill me." Her words silenced him.
"Go on. You wouldn't care, no one would care, so just do it. Kill me."

He tilted his head and laughed, slightly unsure of what to do. Harley had called his bluff, so now he could act or back down.

He lowered the knife.

"You can't do it, and I know why."
"Why?"
"Because you'll miss me-"
"Bullshit."
"Because when I'm with you you feel something, deep down within that dead heart of yours.  You feel something, something that you've never felt before."
"Lies."
"And you like it."
"Lies."
"That's why you never killed me and that's why you live in constant fear that one day you'll come home and I'll be gone."
"Lies."
"And you know what," Harley leant forward in her seat. "It's the truth," she leant back again, "one day you will come home, and I won't be there."
"You liar!" He brought his hand down across her face.

Harley spat.
"And you know where I'll be?"
"Where?"
"As far away as possible from you."

He threw a fist at her but Harley had already dodged it, she stood at the door within a moment, and turned to him.

"But don't you worry." A tear of blood rolled down the side of her face.
"According to you, I'll always come back."

Then she was gone.
