They sat across from each other, hearts pounding and mouths dry, the fight, their final fight had just finished and now Harley was silent.
Her throat ached and she could feel the tears coating her eyes.
He sat across from her, fingernails digging into palms, unable to speak through the anger that muted him. He gritted his teeth, gritted until his gums hurt and the muscle of his jaw throbbed.
He couldn't look at her.
Not whilst he knew that she was crying. But she was there, metres away, tears beginning to fill her eyes, sadness flowing from her in a great wave threatening to drown him.
Yet he was silent.
Harley stared at him, for a minute, an hour, and still, still, he would not look at her. And why would he? He had already made his point, he had already won.
She looked away, stared out the window and felt a tear slip from her eyes, she pressed her eyes together, unable to speak, and didn't bother to wipe the tear. Shame filled her as another tear followed.
She had her eyes closed, and tears illuminated her cheeks. And the joker glanced away as she turned toward him again. He wanted desperately to reach out, to wipe the liquid from her face. To assure her that everything would be okay, but it wouldn't be okay, not anymore, not ever.
He stood up, stood up and watched her flinch, he strode to the window, and with his back to her he pressed his forehead to the cold glass.
Clarity. He wished.
Please. He swallowed as he heard her stand as well, he could sense her, a ghost behind him.
"It's okay." Her whisper was the last thing he heard, her last words, and they broke him.
Then Harley was gone.
"It's okay, you don't have to love me."
