"What's going on?" John started at Sherlock as he stood, red- faced and irritable. "I know there's something, so, what?"
"It's that woman." Sherlock answered without peaking at John.
"The woman." John scoffed. "Jack?"
"Who else?"
"Oh I don't know, someone about yay taller. Brown hair, unashamed sex kink."
"Clever. John, have you noticed that we've had over a dozen arguments in the short span of our knowledge of that woman's existence?" John opened his mouth to argue, but couldn't find the right words. Sherlock took notice. "Right, you and I, round the clock. Bickering like squirrels, all the while, she remains the subject of every single sentence." Sherlock bit.
"Well now that you say..." John thought. What Sherlock was saying was entirely true, but John just couldn't bring himself to think so. Jack was too sweet and comfortable to be a problem like Sherlock was describing her.
"So you have noticed."
"Sherlock, Jack is a sweet girl. If she is causing all this -"
"She is." Sherlock interrupted knowingly.
"- She's not doing it on purpose." Sherlock scoffed and threw his head back.
"She could be. Either way, the damage is still dealt." John sighed.
"I don't know what has got you so bent out of shape about Jack, but-"
"John, have you considered the fact that she is entirely employed through Mycroft?"
"My God, Sherlock. She is not a spy."
"And how would you know that? Exactly. You wouldn't. Maybe she's been hired to break us. Tear us apart from the inside. How much do we really know about this woman, John? I mean, come on. She appears to us as some attractive, sweet- hearted girl. Weasels her way in with kind words and humble notions, and then? We'll be done with by the week the way it's going now."
"No, Sherlock. Shut up!" John yelled before he could think about why he was so insulted. "Just..." John ran a hand over his mouth and turned from Sherlock. "Just stop. For me." Sherlock blinked and searched John for the source of his outburst. "I may not be as good as you are at deducing people, but..." John tapped his leg irritably. "Jack is a kind soul. She has given us no reason that you can back up, to suspect her of any bad intent, and I wouldn't expect you to realize that because you're Sherlock Holmes, and that's okay, but... You can't presume to know about everything based on cold hard fact alone. Okay? I know it in here, Sherlock." He pointed to his chest. "I know, in here, that Jack is here to help, and she can only try so hard for you. Sherlock, do you trust me?" Sherlock looked away, prompting John to turn around and reassert with a bit more bass in his voice.
"Sherlock, do you... trust... me?" John said slowly and sternly. Sherlock glanced at him and looked down to his feet.
"Yes, of course." He answered quickly, so as John had a fifty percent chance of actually hearing. He did, and he nodded, sniffing.
"Then wait. If there is truly something going on with her and Mycroft, then we'll know. She's living with us. We'll be able to stop her before anything too dangerous happens." John said calmly. Sherlock knew this was true, and he trusted John, but he couldn't bring himself down off the fence about Jack. There was just something about her. Something about her presence. It threw Sherlock off. "Yes?" John pushed.
"Fine." Sherlock agreed. For now, she was safe. But he would be watching her.
"Great. Now let's get back there and pick up the shambles you made of this case." John walked back toward the crime scene. Sherlock hesitated, but soon followed. As he got closer, he could make out Jack's voice, and the closer he came, the more clear each word got. She was saying something to Donovan, who didn't like it very much.
"I sense a lot of loneliness and insecurity. So I'll give you some advice; Ask for a raise or go back to school. You might not feel so pressed by Sherlock's authority then."
"Okay! Alright, alright, alright!" Greg leaped into the conversation just as Donovan was about to argue back. "What are we girls chatting about here?" He looked between Jack and Donovan. Sherlock watched Jack as she turned his way. She was still just as beautiful as when he first laid eyes on her, but Sherlock knew there had to be something more about her. There just had to be. He stared at her in wonder as she realized he and John had already come back. Jack flushed a little, which didn't surprise Sherlock, but it made him feel a certain other way. "No?" Lestrade shook his head and wrapped his arm around Jack's shoulders, walking towards John and Sherlock, ushering them back towards the street. "Er- Say. How about I just get you guys outta here? Huh? It seems like the work environment can't stop hitting snags." He suggested, even going through the trouble of hailing a cab. Sherlock felt like a gradeschooler, having to be paraded out of the classroom. This hadn't happened in years.
