"You're all that I hoped to find in every single way and everything I would give
is everything you couldn't take. 'Cause nothing feels like home, you're a thousand miles away. "

(Maya's dorm mate)

I heard Maya giggle at the door, I internally rolled my eyes. Why were freshmen so naive?

It had been almost a year since Harry and I were together, surly I wasn't jealous.

I follow the couple out of the room and into the hallway, they walked a few feet in front of me whispering about who-knows-what.

Maya seems like a nice girl, should I caution her about his promiscuous ways? She can't actually have feelings for him yet, can she?

We boarded the elevator in awkward silence.

"Harry, this is Sara, my roommate. Sara, this is Harry." Maya smiled innocently as the doors shut. "I'm sure you guys have seen each other around."

More than seen each other around, honey. Poor girl had no idea what she was in for.

"Nice to meet you." Harry said awkwardly. He looked at me, eyes pleading for me to play along.

"You too." I said after pausing for a few seconds. The doors slid open to the first floor, Harry let us out first. Even if he broke your heart, he was a gentleman about it.

We walked to the cafeteria side by side, again in silence. After ordering breakfast from Ihop, we sat at a square table. I positioned myself next to Maya, so Harry was forced to sit across from her.

"It was really nice outside." Maya said, cutting into her maple syrup drenched waffles.

"Reminds me of home." I added. It was in the high 60s, low 70s, the wind blew lightly.

"Eh. I like cooler weather better." Harry said.

Nothing was ever good enough for him, especially the things he couldn't control.

"Why don't you just enjoy the weather, instead of whining?" I asked, surprised at my own words.

"I'm not whining, just stating an opinion. Can you handle an opposing opinion?" He shot back. "Sara, was it?"

How dare he act like we didn't know each other.

Maya sat silently. Surely she knew by then Harry and I had a hidden past.

"Tomorrow maybe you and I could go to this restaurant off campus?" Harry said to Maya, completely ignoring my presence. "Their chicken and waffles are amazing."

"I love chicken and waffles." Maya said before taking a drink of her orange juice. "I would love to."

The rest of breakfast was filled with light conversation that Maya tried to include me in and Harry tried to exclude me from.

Shortly after breakfast Maya, Harry, and I walked to our dorm room.

"It was nice having breakfast with you." Harry said. They trailed a few feet behind me in order to have privacy yet I could hear their whole conversation. I unlocked the door and slipped into the dorm before I could hear any more of Harry's overused lines.

Minutes later Maya walked into our small dorm, shutting the door behind her.

"What was that?" She asked after moments of silence.

I struggled internally. Should I tell her the truth or should I continue to lie to her? Either way she'll be hurt in the end.

"What was what?" I attempted to play dumb.

"Uhm, Stop whining and enjoy the weather." She mimicked my words and tone. "I know you and Harry have encountered each other before."

"We've had a few classes together." I wasn't lying.

"There's more." She crossed her arms over her chest. I guessed she wasn't as naive as I had previously predicted.

"Why does it matter? It's not like we're best friends or something."

"I wouldn't be acting like this if I didn't feel lied to. I do understand that we're not bffs but I don't have to be your best friend for you to tell me the truth." She reasoned.

"We were in a brief relationship." I eyed the wooden flooring. "It was over a year ago, it meant nothing."

"Ok." She nodded, her face emotionless. "Why did you guys have to lie to me?"

"Are you angry?" I asked her.

"No. I just don't like being lied to." She simply stated. "If anything you should be angry at me."

"A few months ago I'd be furious. Eventually I learned to let go."

"And the hardest part of living is just taking breaths to stay. 'Cause I know I'm good for something, I just haven't found it yet." - Mayday Parade (Miserable at best)
