Bren
Almost as soon as Will bit him, Matt started convulsing. His eyes rolled to show white and his head jerked back between his hunched shoulders. His jaw was a harsh snarl of pain, chin jutting out and teeth bared.
I acted on my vet's impulse, even as my mind whited out in shock and terror. I grabbed Matt's jaw and wedged my fingers inside his mouth. He kept chomping on my fingers, but at least he wasn't choking and his teeth were still human and not breaking through my skin.
"What's wrong?" Will's calm, commanding voice betrayed by his panic-widened eyes. Blood dribbled down his chin and he didn't wipe it off. Matt's blood. "What's happening to him?"
Connor and Liv had their arms clamped around Matt, trying to keep him from bucking too much. They might have been holding him up, his body was trembling like his legs would give out any moment.
In my mind I flipped through all the books I'd ever read, all the information I'd ever been given, the lectures and the garbled gossip. I had years of practice as the person the pack turned to when they needed help. I had to look past Matt's pain to try and save him.
What was wrong? The alpha, the full moon... Everything was in place. Except me biting him as well.
"Nothing's wrong," I said. My lips were numb. I could taste blood. "The transformation's just harder on him, because he doesn't have much power."
"What's wrong?" This time it was Chop asking. Her face was blanched. She pushed closer.
"Nothing. Get back." My voice came out harsher than I'd intended. Whether this was my fault or not, there wasn't anything I could do now. I couldn't unbite him. People crowding around would only make it worse.
Matt's arms were trying to shift, I could see that. I knew all the tell-tale signs from my own transformations. I also knew the horror stories if he didn't let the shift take hold—or if he couldn't.
I leaned in close to his ear, where he'd hear me over his heartbreaking little moans. "Matt. Matt. Can you hear me? You have to shift. You have to."
Matt's eyes swiveled around to look at me, and his hand clutched at my arm. I let go of his jaw. There were white toothmarks pressed into my fingers.
"It hurts," Matt choked.
"You're talking!" Connor said.
"I know it hurts," I soothed. "It'll hurt less when you shift. Can you feel how to do that?"
Matt shook his head jerkily. He tried to say something, then choked and coughed.
"Blood," Liv said quietly.
I looked around and, sure enough, there was fresh blood on the snow. Matt coughed again and more blood splattered across the ground and his chin.
"Why is he bleeding?" Will asked.
I took a deep breath and steadied myself. Keep calm. Stay in control. "His organs are changing, but they can't transform completely. His body's trying to be two different forms at once."
It was my fault. He could die, and I'd bitten him with my weak omega mouth.
I forced myself not to think about it. I had to help Matt. All I could do was focus on him.
"I can't..." Matt choked. "I don't know how to..."
"Use your Vulcan mind meld," Chop said. "You can show him."
Will chewed on his lip, his eyes squinted narrow. "I can't. I can't connect with him. It's like... I don't know, like there's a fog or something around his mind?"
