Matt
I woke up when it started raining. Water didn't touch me, but it was the sound that woke me up. The thundering of drops impacting on the earth around me, the trembling of the earth that sounded like drums right next to my ears.
It felt like a violent storm, but when I opened my eyes I saw it was just a light shower.
My Bren-rug wriggled over me, to try and keep rain off me. The rock ledge above us was doing that well enough on its own though, and Bren was heavy.
"It's not wet," I mumbled. "You're squishing me."
"I'm keeping you safe."
"I'm a werewolf too now. I can keep you safe!"
I play-acted at pushing Bren off. Funny thing though, I was able to lift myself up on my funny little wolf legs and roll Bren onto the ground beside me.
He made a surprised snort, staring up at me with wide golden eyes.
"Whoa. Did I just become super-strong? Usually you're really heavy!"
"This is a great sign Matt. Werewolf power isn't just about physical strength. You're strong because the pack have your back, they respect you and believe in you. That gives you power."
I covered Bren with my puffy wolf body. Drifts of silvery fur floated around him, hiding his body like he was in the clouds or a fog machine on stage.
"I'm powerful," I said. "Everything's okay. I told you it would be!" I rubbed my snout all over his soft head, loving the fur that felt like extra-long stubble.
Bren lifted his head to look up at me over his shoulder. His yellow eyes and black mask weren't as nice as his usual brown skin and eyes, but it was still fun looking at him. I thought I'd get used to it though, see him in his wolf form enough that I fell for it as hard as I'd fallen for Bren's human face.
"You look good," Bren said, like he was reading my mind. His face softened and his ears swiveled around. I didn't spend much time around dogs but I thought I was looking at a happy face. I felt happy, anyway. He was giving me happy vibes.
"Are you reading my mind?" I asked. "I was just thinking you looked good, then you said I looked good."
"I can't read minds." He licked playfully at my nose. "You just look great."
Bren opened his mouth and bumped his face into mine. For a moment his fearsome teeth scared me and I wondered if he was trying to bite me. But then I realized it wasn't a bite he was going for, it was a kiss.
"I'm not making out with your wolf face!" I said.
Bren's shuddering shook my whole body like I was riding a bumper cart. When the rippling shift ended, Bren's human face was blinking up at me.
"Now you look even better," I said. "No offense. Your wolf is pretty too."
He smiled, small but genuine. "Your turn?"
"Yeah, cool. I'll just turn into a person again." I thought about being a human. Thought about it real, real hard. Nothing happened. "Oh no. This again!"
"It's okay." He rubbed my shoulder. "No pressure. Your first full moon. It will take time."
When his hand came up to rub my head, I saw that his arm was still covered in fur. "Hey! You're not fully person either."
He grimaced. "Full moon's rough on me, too." Bren ran his fingers through my fur and stroked my ears. "Think about these getting smaller and moving down your head. Your nose will shrink back in."
