Audrey woke hours later, the house was dark and empty. She pushed her matted hair off her face, her skin was sticky with dry blood and there where glass splinters all over her right arm. Audrey looked around the hall, there where pieces of shattered glass scattered all around the floor. She carefully got up and tip toed past the mess. Audrey ran up the stairs and made it to the bathroom in time to vomit, her head was pounding and the scent of blood kept filling her nose. It took a couple of minutes for audrey to regain her balance and the nausea to pass, she stood up and looked herself over in the mirror. Her right arm was deffinetly in need of attention with all the glass and scrapes, there where bruises all over her body and a long cut ran from her left brow bone to her cheek. please don't leave any scars, please don't leave any scars, she begged. Audrey knew it was stupid to worry about these things but people would learn the truth and shed end up dead because of it!
After carefully removing the glass and gingerly disinfecting her wounds, she decided to jump in the shower. The lukewarm water helped relax her muscles but it did nothing for her soul. She automatically washed her hair and body, one of the things Audrey hated most was having dry blood and sweat on her skin for long periods of time. It always seemed to remind her too much about how you got the injury, like every detail was seen in perfect symmetry to what actually happened and when it was washed away the memory began to blur at its edges like an old photo.
She dried off and put on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt, as she was brushing her hair she caught a glimpse of the bottle of aspirin that her father had probably used the night before, thats when the thoughts began...
You know Audrey that whole bottle could be the soloution to this little problem you've got going on here. Her inner voice chimed in, she shook her head fighting back warm tears. I bet it won't even hurt... No im not going to do that, I don't want to have my own body betray me, I don't want something thats meant to help people kill them too! Audrey clenched her stomach and left the bathroom trying to get the words to leave, she walked into her room and her eyes met the ceiling fan. You know, if you can find a nice strong rope and a chair you've got a great little ending to your life story. Audrey wimpered and tried to shut out the thought. I am not suicidal, I will not do something as stupid as that and my life IS NOT OVER! She took a deep breath and shut the door of her room, she now stood in the upstairs hall. Why don't you wanna leave on your own terms? you'll most likely be dead by the end of the week anyways, This'll spare you the pain. "Shut up!" Audrey screamed aloud. She ran the stairs through the office to avoid the glass and into the kitchen, she regreted it immediatly. Ooh nice choice, there's some really nice stuff here, before the thought could even be finished Audrey had left the room and ran back upstairs into her room. Don't think, dont think, you're safe don't think...this is life there are no doors, no magic portals, no windows...one straight line, one path, you can't leave it. Audrey told herself. she took a few breaths before realizing the hidden genius behind what she had just thought.
"I'll run away." She whispered, eyes locking with the window to nobody but herself. "nobodys going to know I'm gone, the drunk wont care and I'm suspended so the school board wont start calling until next week!" she looked at the calendar and smiled. "todays april fiftheenth, its not gonna get cold for a while! In fact its only gonna get warmer!" Audrey exclaimed and smiled at herself, she had a plan.
She pulled her backpack from its hidding place and dumped out its contents, her textbooks landed on the floor with a thump. Audrey turned towards her dresser and began to think of what she would need. She pulled out a bag full of toiletries and put it into the center pocket of her backpack. She pulled open the top drawer and grabbed an armfull of uderwear, socks and bras, she folded them to be as small as possible and shoved them into the two zip up side pockets that where meant for water bottles. she pulled two other drawers open and grabbed a few pairs of jeans, three pairs of shorts, a long sleeved shirt, two tees, four undershirts and a few sweaters. she lastly took out her safe, unlocked it and carefully pulled out its contents. She looked into her full wallet and counted the money, she had saved 500$ in the four years she had been working part time. she put it in a secret pocket within her bag and zipped it up.
Audrey grabbed her suede boots from the closet knowing it would get cold at night, she packed her knockoff converse a well. She pulled on her jacket and felt the pockets for her pocket knife knowing it might come in handy. It was still there, she began to remember the day her grandfather had given it to her before he died. He had told her the memories behind it and why he wanted her to have it, he said. "One day you're going to be a pretty little lass, youll have to watch ur back. Take this, it will protect you. Use it wisely Audrey." She shook the memory away and turned to the door, she took her last breath in the house she had grown to hate and walked out and into the clear dark night.
