"Everyone take a seat around the table," I say aloud, placing down three spoons in the center of the glass.
"Why are there only three of them?" Zach asks, gesturing to the utensils.
I shuffle the cards as I explain.
"Each round we pass around the cards. Each player gets four in their hand, and when they get passed one they can use, they have to discard one to take the place of the original and continue passing." I say, brushing my baby hairs out of my face. I look over at Zach who focuses on my hands dealing. His hair, naturally flowing and glimmering in the dim room, lazily flops on top of his head as he runs a hand through it. He looks cute when he concentrates.
Stop staring Reagan! Now is not the time!
I pry my gaze off of him and continue.
"The goal is to get four of a kind. When you do get it, you take a spoon," I added, finishing dealing the rest of the cards. I spread the spoons over the table, placing them an equal distance from one another. "When you see someone else take a spoon, you do too. Whoever is left without one gets an S. You get a letter each time you lose, and when you have S-P-O-O-N-S spelt, you're out."
I look up to Jennette, who is nodding.
As she cracks her knuckles, eyes focused on the cards on the table in front of her, she announces: "Let's begin."
I look over at Luke, who is already marveling at his cards. Concentration fills the room as we each observe our hands.
I begin by taking one card from the pile and passing it to Luke, who takes a quick look and passes it to Jennette. Jennette passes it to Zach, realizing she has no use for it, and Cali-boy takes the card, replacing it with a different one. He places it in the trash pile.
This time, I send out the cards much faster. Ace, eight, three, two... the numbers fly by as I am looking for fives. Occasionally I see one of them take a card and swap it for another.
I have two fives, and I need two more.
It is only now I see Luke's mouth twitch as he grins with content.
He must have four of a kind.
I glue my eyes to the spoons, not even paying attention to the cards I am dealing.
Before I know what hit me, Luke grabs a spoon. Jennette goes in for it next, and I'm lunging across the table for the last one.
Zach is too.
In slow motion, I see Zach's hand grabbing for the same spot I am, and I throw my body on the table to get the spoon.
Me? Competitive? Never heard of that...
His hand closes around the spoon, and I mentally curse him out. I just taught these idiots this game and they're beating me in it!
"Give it up!" I shout at Zach, placing my hand over his, attempting to get the spoon out of his grasp.
He moves his hand towards his chest, where I follow.
His one hand grasps the utensil where my two hands attempt to pry them free.
