"Strike Three!"
Sapphire awkwardly slinked back to her disappointed teammates. She was smiling to herself; that's the effect that someone like Ruby had on her. Whenever she was with her, she forgot about everything. When the gem wasn't looking into the future, she was gazing into her girlfriend's ruby red eyes. She was matching her flawless smile. She was holding her warm, gentle hands.
"If this was flirting baseball, we would've won by now," Amethyst joked, which was accompanied with a snort from Lapis. "Sorry, it won't happen again" she apologised, lying through her teeth. She was already trying to grab Ruby's attention. She blushed intensely when her companion straightened her cap and gave her a cheeky wink.
The rest of the day was smooth sailing. Well, for the pair anyway. The snuck off mid-game to cloud-gaze, they exchanged flowers and cheesy pick-up lines, at one point they even fused into Garnet (just for a second) to get their fix. They quickly shuffled back to their places and pretended nothing had happened as Pearl called out that it was time to switch.
Strangely, the Rubies stayed put. They all had knowing smiles on their faces, apart from one of them, who always seemed to be confused. The leader of the Rubies looked up to the sky and on cue, the clouds started to part. A gigantic, diamond-shaped object slowly descended from the sky and landed in the middle of the baseball field. It opened up, and out came Yellow Diamond herself.
There was a unison of gasps from the crystal gems and then a summoning of weapons. Yellow Diamond approached with four beefy Amethyst soldiers around her for protection. Pearl was the first to speak, and after she instinctively pushed Steven behind her she shouted, "What are you doing here? This is a gem-controlled pla-"
"Oh, knock it off," Yellow Diamond cut her off, "Don't you know I've heard that from you over and over?" She paced back and forth, her hands behind her back. "Now," she stopped and gave Sapphire an intense glare, "Where's the fusion?" Ruby froze up. "What? Wa-what-wh-" "Them two over there, ma'am," the main Ruby growled, pointing at Ruby and then Sapphire. "Oh," the Diamond squinted her eyes in disgust, "Blue Diamond told me all about you two".
Sapphire started to run to Ruby's side for comfort. They both locked eyes and she knew the same thought was running through their heads:
Fuse.
Ruby held her arms out, ready to catch her, but the diamond was one step ahead. She grasped onto Sapphire's arm, yanking her viciously just out of Ruby's reach. The gem wailed in pain at Yellow Diamond's tightening grip as she dragged her towards the ship. "Sapphy!" Her girlfriend cried out. Two of the Amethyst guards caught her before she could run to get her. In fact, no one could do anything as the ship was gone in a flash.
"Wait, what about us?" One of the Amethyst guards demanded, referring to the ship that had just left without them. They dropped Ruby onto the floor. "Yeah, where do we go?" The other one asked. "In the burning room" Amethyst answered, poofing them instantly. As she bubbled them and sent them away, her hands were shaking. What the hell had just happened?
Ruby was hitting the ground forcefully with her fist, tears evaporating on her steaming skin. She glared up into the sky, in the hopes that Sapphire would float back down, but she never did.
