REMEMBER MORE
CHAPTER 29
The first thing Yan did when they got back to the hotel was go to the washroom. All that water. Man! She had to pee!
When she was done, she came back out and fished out her computer. She sat down on the bed and turned it on. John settled down beside her.
He leaned over to stare into her screen. "Why couldn't you tell me in the car?"
"Just a sec." She clicked through a series of links. She brought up a map. She turned to him. "Now, didn't you tell me before that the Others, in addition to having spent time in Egypt and all those other places, at some point, they had also gone to China too?"
He nodded.
"So where in China did they go?"
He shrugged. "There weren't a lot of different places. It was mostly just this one spot."
"And what spot was that?"
John frowned. "I…I wouldn't know in terms of modern place names…"
"Could you show me on a map?" She presented her computer to him.
He leaned over. He examined the map on the screen, one of Mainland China. "Around here." He circled a small area on the map.
Yan read out the name of the place he indicated. "Wudang Shan." She sat back. "Wudang Mountain." She began nodding. She smiled. Tossing her head back, she laughed.
"Yan…"
Yan spun around to face him. She was beaming with excitement. Setting the notebook off to one side, she caught him up in a great big bear hug and squeezed him tight. She drew back. "That's great! That's perfect! That's just…"
John leaned back. He frowned. "Yan…"
"…wonderful!"
"What?"
"It makes perfect sense!" She jumped off the bed. Bouncing around the room, she began to pack. "Oh, we'll have to call Mike…" She turned and beamed at him some more and then raced off for the phone.
John jumped over. He reached out and stayed her hand on the phone. "Wait." He turned her around so she faced him. "What are you talking about?"
Yan smiled up at him. "Don't you see? It makes perfect sense. The circle with the 'S' inside. I feel so stupid!" She slapped her forehead with her palm. "Why didn't I see it before?" She turned away and dove back into packing.
"What?"
"But you know, you can't blame me for that…" She wasn't talking to John and he knew it. "…because I've always been so used to seeing the symbol the other way around, you see? Like with a backward 'S'? But no! Jonas had to draw it with a regular 'S'…" Her hands were flying all over. "…and then inside that last chamber, with the symbol spinning around on an axis on the displays like that, I finally got to see it the way I was used to seeing it all my life and so…" She stopped. She stood back. "…wait a minute. What was I supposed to do? I was supposed to do something…" Her eyes widened. "…oh right! I have to call Mike." She raced over to the phone again, which John was still holding in his hand.
He held it off to one side and away from her. "Hold on!"
Yan stopped. She stepped back. "What?"
"Slow down. You're like a chipmunk. I don't know what you're saying."
Yan sighed. She slumped her shoulders. "Okay fine. It's like this." She folded her arms over her chest. "You know that symbol that Jonas has been drawing for us all this time? The circle with the 'S' in it? The one he's been leaving for us every chance he got?"
