CHAPTER 35

That first night, back at John's mansion and in the library, as the memories came flooding into Jonas' brain, he remembered the Others and that they had been here on Earth. With his background in medicine and TCM, he also realized that the power building up inside his body was magnetism and qi at the same time. But what was the meaning of this power? What was it for? What was supposed to happen next? Jonas didn't have all the answers just yet, but he had an idea.

In searching through his memories regarding the ancients, he had come to a conclusion, the exact same one that his father was going to come to in a few days' time from now. Jonas concluded that the first set of answers was hidden somewhere in Egypt.

Soon after, he found the microphone in the lamp. And that changed everything. Someone was listening in on them. Someone wanted to know about the red serum, qi and the secrets of the Others and all that he and his father had figured out up to this moment in time.

No, Jonas thought. He destroyed the lamp. He could not allow that to happen. He could not let this power fall into the wrong hands. He must beat them to it.

But what of his father? Could he help? Should Jonas involve John?

Again, no, he was too old and frail. He would get hurt in the process.

No, it was up to Jonas himself. The task fell to him and him alone.

So, later that night, he sneaked out.

Jonas got about as far as the garden at the back of the house, before he realized he hadn't thought this through very well. He had no means to get to Egypt. He had no money at all! All he had brought with him was his supply of the red pills and the bathrobe he was wearing…

Just as he was struggling with whether or not to go back to the house like a sorry, wet little puppy, Beltzner showed up in his SUV.

They talked it over.

As it turned out, Beltzner had no problems admitting that he was the one who had bugged the house. Of course he wanted to find out how the project was coming along. It was his in the first place! He was the one who had involved John and Robert way back at the beginning, when they had only been junior students in the program and didn't know anything from anything. It was his lab that the work was being done in and his lab that got burned down in the end. It was him who was blamed for Robert's death and him who was evicted from the university as a result. Of course, he wanted to find out what's been happening since then. He had a right!

What he didn't tell Jonas just then was how he had gotten his hands on the mysterious red substance in the first place. It was called 386U back then. And it had shown up on his doorstep one fine morning, out of the blue, with no one in sight to claim responsibility for it. Just a note asking if he could look into what this stuff was. That was all. And some old guy delivering Chinese take-out to the office next door, but that wasn't important…

Over the last two days, through what he had overheard via the bug in the lamp, Beltzner found out that the key to the mystery lay in ingesting the serum and then taking it on a regular basis over time, so he had already started doing that. But having awakened the qi inside his body, he had no training in TCM or Taiji, so he was not progressing at all. He was stuck at the stage where everything just smelled awful to him.

"So you just started to teach him everything?" John scoffed. "Just like that?"

Jonas glared at his father. "He threatened to kill you if I didn't!" He rolled his eyes.
