The church erupted into chaos. Screams began to fill the large open room as people ran out of the church in terror. The scent of blood and fear tainted Lillian's nose, coming from every direction in waves. By the time the people cleared out, only a few still stood.
"Get me an ambulance," a short-haired woman dressed in a sheriff's uniform was commanding into a radio. "An assassination attempt was just committed against April Young. We need medical attention immediately."
Then another voice sounded. A brown haired young man came dashing over to the stage with speed only a vampire had, followed closely by three other boys and two girls, all around the same age. "No," the brown-haired young man said. He dropped down onto his knees next to April, who now lay unconscious, the blade protruding from her chest. Blood was flowing in a constant stream from the wound. He made a move to pull it out, but before he could do so, Lillian dropped down from the balcony.
She landed on her feet, slowly and deliberately making her way down the aisle of the church to where April lay dying. Everyone turned around to look at her, including the sheriff, who quickly drew out her gun. Lillian heard the click as it was loaded and aimed directly at her.
"Don't move," the sheriff said.
Lillian stopped, only for a moment, before she was in front of the gun, knocking it out of the sheriff's hands with ease. "Pathetic," the vampire said. Then, in one quick motion, she grabbed the human by her throat, tossing her through the air. She landed with a heart-wrenching thud.
"Mom!" The shriek came from behind Lillian. She turned around to face another girl, who seemed to be around her age, at least the age in which Lillian had been turned. The other girl, a vampire, dashed to her mother's side, biting her wrist and shoving the blood down the sheriff's throat.
Lillian turned back to the rest of the group, only to stop dead as one particular face looked at her.
She had the familiar brown eyes, although they didn't look as hard, and hair to match. She was wearing a black dress for the funeral.
Lillian looked at the vampire, her heart hardening with thoughts of rage and betrayal. "Katerina?" Then there was a snap of bones, and Lillian fell to the floor.
She woke in a dank cellar, tied to a chair with what must have been ropes drenched in vervain.
In front of Lillian stood Damon, and next to him what she supposed was his younger brother Stefan.Lillian clenched her teeth against the pain around her wrists and ankle, then forced a smile upon her face. "Hello, boys," she said.
Stefan narrowed his eyes. "Who are you?"
Lillian blatantly ignored his question and asked a different one herself. "How is poor April?" she mocked. "Dead, I hope. I heard she had an encounter with a knife."
