Gray opened the door to Rowan's intensive care room. The room should have been well lit, but it was not at this time because of the dark clouds that were ready to burst. Hopefully, this would be the last thunderstorm that Tunol saw for a while. Gray turned to look at the figure who was lying peacefully in the bed like a porcelain doll with her head and most of her body wrapped in bandages. She looked so delicate, most of the color drained from her face, like a fading flower.
"I did it, Rowan," Gray said as he went over and placed his hand on hers. "Just like I promised. This world is really going to change for the better now. Principal Brown is done. I'm in charge now." He paused and took a long look at her face. The heart rate monitor seemed to beep slower every second.
"You can't leave me," Gray begged as his face fell. "Listen to me Rowan, please. Stay with me..." The sky grumbled with the sound of thunder. Gray replayed every moment he had spent with Rowan in his head. Then the scene from "Sleeping Beauty" where the prince had awakened the princess came to his mind.
Maybe I can wake Rowan up that way.
So, Gray leaned over and put his face close to Rowan's. This close, Gray could smell what made him think of a bright summer day as shown in a children's book in the Confiscation Room that was now wide open. He could hear her slow, deep breaths mixed with the sound of rain pattering on the window as he did exactly what the prince in "Sleeping Beauty" had done, though he still did not know what it was called. He knelt beside Rowan again and said her name in a quiet voice right before the slow up and down movement of her lungs stopped and the heart monitor flatlined. Rowan was gone, and the last thing she left Gray was the ability to cry.
