Well, here I am, sitting in front of my computer, writing something I never imagined I would write. Fanfiction doesn't have the best reputation, and I'm sure there will be those who will scorn me for doing so. Well, to those that are already hovering over the close button, here's what I have to say to you:
I will write whatever I please, be it fantasy, science fiction, or...fanfiction.
With that out of the way, I have a few things that I would like to address before jumping into this.
As I struggled to leave behind the amazing four years I spent in high school, I reflected upon those that truly impacted my life. There is a select group of people who, at a time when I needed it most, cared and supported me.
Life was rough growing up. I never engaged with many people around me, frankly because I was afraid of what they would say in reply. I always felt like the outcast because of the things I liked, the hobbies I enjoyed, and my overall attitude on life. It never seemed to match up with those around me, and even today, I often reflect on my isolation as both a blessing and a curse.
There was no one to confide in. Not a soul. And it was hard to keep everything bottled up all the time. My talents, my dreams, my aspirations...all hidden behind an indifferent mask that tried so hard to "fit in."
What a mistake that was.
It was high school where I felt like I was on the verge of exploding. I screamed for people to speak to, a friend that could understand me and accept the real me. Not the one who laughed at jokes he didn't think were funny, not the kid who started playing sports for the sake of showing the world a shred of athleticism. I wanted someone I knew would help me spread my wings and soar.
And I did.
I met many incredible friends on my journey through high school. True friends. People that I could put all of my trust in, people that would cheer me on as I walked the once solitary path to my dreams, people that truly enjoyed Eric's company, not the robot that replaced him.
And so, here I am trying to make a name for myself on Wattpad and FanFiction.net, bursting with confidence and hope that I can sit behind my desk and type away, leaving the harsh realities of my life in favor of the imagination that has flourished since childhood. I can write with the knowledge that there is a line of friends cheering me on, pushing me to chase my dreams.
That's why this was written. Almost every character in this fanfiction is inspired by a certain person in my life who gave me a shoulder to lean on. This entire story was built for those who dug Eric out of the coffin he was hiding in all those years ago. You all deserve some kind of repayment for what you all did, and thus, I have given you the greatest gift I can give: my talents.
John Steinbeck once promised to make a box for his friend, Pat. This promise spawned one of his greatest works, East of Eden, his "box" to put in whatever he had. He poured his heart and soul into that box, creating a story beyond comprehension.
Consider this as my box, a box to give you everything that I have. After all, you gave me everything already. Now it's my turn to send the kindness back.
So here are your characters, crafted by not only me, but your generous feedback for which Pokémon you felt represented you the most.
Matheus - Your energetic, adventurous attitude can really brighten anyone's day. Vigil the Sentret will suit you well.
Jack - The iron wall, the one who can rarely be put down or upset. Waver the Jigglypuff will make sure to follow your lead.
Paul - Young and innocent, bursting with a playful disposition, although a complete goofball. Calyx the Squirtle will share your blossoming personality.
Cameron - Always there for me. The most supportive friend I could ever ask for. You always know how to cheer me up. I'm sure Laurel the Bayleef's sweet aromas will brighten everyone's day just as you did mine.
Rose - The genius. The incredible writer with a contagious ambition that continuously pushed me further. There will never be a character more perfect for you than Auris the Meowstic.
Gabe - If I ever needed a good laugh, you were one of the people to go to. Oracle the Riolu will mirror that humorous disposition.
Kernah - My rival. We had some really exciting moments. For such an excitable personality, Fletch the Rapidash is your match.
Deja - Your odd, often times dark personality fits Noire the Gothorita to the T.
Kevin - You made me look at art and storytelling in completely new ways. And as unpredictable as art can be, Aster the Umbreon will reign supreme.
Special thanks to Kevin aka Zinkybeta for the amazing cover art (which is actually still in progress). Should you wish to check out his other work, check out his Tumblr. Seriously, this guy is incredible:
