CHAPTER THREE

ONE DAY AT A TIME

When I looked at my alarm clock, I saw that it was ten thirty. With a groan, I got up and ran to the shower, washing off all the tears and any stray grass from the park the previous day. When I got out, I walked to my room and dried off, then dressed in a vintage 'Bullet for My Valentine' tee, black skinny jeans and black sneakers. I decided to live life, no matter how hard it was without my grandmother.

I had to take things one day at a time, and that was what I was going to do. And I had thought about what Josh had said about me not looking good in sweatpants and sweaters, hence the outfit. I was carefully applying mascara when the doorbell rang downstairs and my mother called for me. "Sam, Josh is here!"

"I know!" I answered back. I grabbed my wallet, even though I know he said he was paying, and stuffed it into my pocket. I grabbed my phone before leaving my room and ran down the stairs, jumping into Josh's arms.

"Whoa! Someone's gotten their cup of happy juice this morning," he said laughing as he balanced himself, wrapping his arms around my waist to support me. I beamed up at him. Josh was pretty cute; he had black cropped hair with electrifying green eyes, small nose, his lips weren't thin or full, they were somewhere in between, and he stood at about 6'2. He was definitely taller than I was. I swatted his arm while he placed me down on the ground before turning to my mom with a smile.

"Is it alright if Josh and I go to the mall?" I saw my mother's eyes light up as she nodded enthusiastically.

"Of course it's alright! Just call to let me know when you're coming home." I smiled and walked over to her, hugging her.

"Awe, family love," Josh said, taking short strides and wrapping his arms around both my mother and I. We laughed as we looked up at him to see him cuddling the air.

"Oh brother. . . Well, we better get going before he starts making out with the air. See you, ma." She laughed as I pulled Josh off her and dragged him to the door.

"Bye guys, have fun!"

We walked outside and I eyed his cherry red 2010 Ford GT Mustang. When did he get it?

"Yeah, I just got it, so don't freak out and think you went into 'Bella Swan zombie mode', okay?" I turned to him smiling weakly.

"I'm not sure if that was an insult or a compliment, or none of the above, but this car looks sweet!" He chuckled and grinned.

"I know, right!" He carefully hugged the new car. "Gosh, I love this car so damn much." I raised an eyebrow and nodded slowly.

"Yeah, I can tell. Now keep it in your pants." He gave me a 'don't-joke-with-my-car' look and opened the passenger's door for me. I smiled at him and hopped in. The car's interior was leather in black and red and it was stick shift. As I closed the door, Josh climbed into the car and turned on the car. The vents blew out cold air and the radio began to play Keisha's 'Tik Tok.' Josh leaned over and turned down the music before turning to look at me.

His playful expression fell as he became serious, his hand reaching over and taking my own. "Are you okay?" He asked his voice full of concern. I could see why he was worried, we hadn't really hung out much since my grandmother's passing and I was thankful he waited until we were out of the house before asking. I gave a shaky sigh and frowned, shrugging.

"Sam," he continued, giving my hand a light squeeze, "I re-read your text last night and I thought about it." He glanced out the window and his jaw tightened. It took him a moment before he looked back at me. "Were you thinking about hurting yourself?"
