I woke up the next day alertly. I knew that today was the day where I'd be taken to my new home. I was eager to meet Christy's children, who I've heard were about my age. And especially her husband. Alice has been laughing every time I say how much I want to meet him, and I don't even know why.
I got changed into a red T-shirt and shorts for that day. I went over to Alice's room, only to remember that she got adopted the day before. I sighed.
It won't be the same.
Yes, it will. We're still friends.
That's what she says. She's really gonna ditch you and leave you.
No, she won't. This is Alice we're talking about.
Fine. Think what you wanna think.
I will.
I went downstairs for breakfast. The food was never that good, but none of us ever complained. We couldn't get better. I always felt sorry for myself whenever we had pancakes because Mom used to make them all the time for me.
They're nothing like your father's, She would say. Your father made the best pancakes ever. He taught me, but I'm nowhere near as good.
I remembered that whenever she talked about Dad, she always brought up how I looked like him.
Kara, She would say. You look a lot like your father. Those gorgeous blue eyes didn't come from me. That amazing brown hair didn't either. Those came from your father, the best man in the world.
And there was also the best woman in the world, I thought back while eating the stale toast and crunchy peanut butter.
"Kara!"Ms. Harly yelled."Your new dad's here!"
I shot up from my bed where I was sitting. Raven was already in her case, packed up and ready to go. I ran down the steps, seeing a silhouette of someone in the door. He didn't seem that tall, but he wasn't short. When I got a bit closer, I could see that he had black hair and glasses, and a crooked smile.
Wait....
I stopped halfway down the steps. I knew that face. I heard of that face.
I hated that face.
He can't be here for you. Maybe that's not him.
I stepped down a few more steps cautiously. He was waiting for me, smiling. I clutched Raven's case.
Maybe he's not here for you.
As if to prove to me that he was there for me, he asked,"Are you Kara?"
I nodded."That's me, thank you very much."I said it coldly to show that I didn't want to be here.
He flinched."I'm your new dad. I know you already met my wife.... I'm here to bring you home." He smiled."Come here."
I willingly went over to him. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't remember which one he was.... Was he Rhett? Or Link? I couldn't remember which one was which.
No. He's your enemy.
Why?
Remember the tall guy? You're supposed to find him.
What's going on?
He's your enemy. You're supposed to hate him.
But he's now my father.
Who cares. He's not your real father.
I didn't know what to do. But as he walked Raven and I toward his car, I thought one thing that stuck in my mind.
Don't trust him.
