Link dropped us off at my house, and I invited Kara to come in.
Kara, carrying her violin, walked in deliberately. She closed the door behind her and we headed into the kitchen.
"So," I started."What do you wanna know?"
"Tell me about my mom," Kara said, placing the violin case on the table and slowly taking it out.
I thought. I didn't really remember Evrett since I haven't seen her since the day before Avery died."Well," I started."Evrett was amazingly talented, even back then, and she never left anywhere without her violin. I'm not surprised that Avery liked her. She was definitely noticeable, wearing makeup and eyeliner and her blonde hair hanging loosely draped onto her shoulders. Of course, your father would never muster up the courage to talk to her. He made me do it."
"Yeah, you told me that," Kara said rudely."Now tell me what my dad was like. I need to know."
I nodded."Well, as you know, he was paralyzed from the waist down,"I remembered."He had brown hair and blue eyes, like yours, except probably a bit messier. He could never stay still; he always had to move, whether it was by talking, playing his guitar, or by wheeling around."
Kara was now taking out her violin and began to play. She abruptly stopped, a scowl appearing on her face."It doesn't sound right, ugh. I can't get it to sound right! Whatever I do, it never sounds right!"
I shrugged."Play an A."
She did, and I, hearing a slight sharp."It's a bit too high."
Kara put her hand on the violin, tuning it. When she was finished, she played A again and said,"It still sounds wrong! Ugh!"
I shrugged again."Are you sure? It sounds perfect to me."
"Oh, I'm sure," Kara flared."Sometimes I just feel like Raven-- oh, crap! Forget I ever said anything! Forget I was ever here! Forget about my life, forget about everything!" She ran through the hallway of my house, probably disturbing my family as she did so.
"Kara, where are you going?"I asked, running after her. I saw her run into an empty room that our family just so happened to have."Kara, what's wrong?"
Kara was then sitting on the floor criss-cross applesauce, crying with her hand over her face with her hand. She sobbed,"I'll never be like Mom. I'll never make her proud. I'm not able to improve, I'm just born with my limits, and my limits are where I'm at."
"That's not true,"I told her."There are no limits if you practice hard enough. Do you think your mom played perfectly right when she picked up her first violin? Do you think your dad strummed the notes on the guitar perfectly when he was eight?"
Kara shook her head."No--"
"Well, then you can't expect yourself to practice perfectly the first time either,"I said.
"But it isn't my first time,"Kara sighed."I played ever since I was two, and I still sound terrible. I'll never sound like mom, one of the most famous violinists to ever live. I can never make her or dad proud."
"You won't if you keep that up,"I said."Kara, listen to me, I need you to listen to me. Your mom would love for you to try your hardest and--"
"I already did,"Kara sobbed, not looking me in the eye, not even looking up from her violin."It's obvious that I will never get it. I-I just want her to be here, and dad too, so then I wouldn' t have to live with Link--"
"Kara, you should be thankful,"I said." Link and Christy decided to adopt you, out of all those people, and they went through a whole lot of trouble doing it. They want the best for you, and--"
"Shut up!" Kara yelled."I don't care! They're not my real parents, and I don't care adput the trouble they went through, I just wanna have my parents back!"
Kara sat back down and continued to sob.
