Dan 1:8; ESV: But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.Daniel was a youth taken captive to Babylon. He knew the lord. He made a decision and he stuck to the decision. He decided not to defile himself with the King's food
It's so rare to find youths like Daniel in a generation like ours where lasciviousness, lust, greediness etc are the order of the day. If we look around, the corruption is so blatant. Social vices are prevalent. Youths are no longer ready to stay close to God. They see that act as a way of life meant for old people. They want to enjoy life to the fullest, according to them, life is too short for them to spend it living what they term an 'austere' life. A life, according to them, which is boring, vapid and unenjoyable.
Youths like Daniel are scarce to come by. Youths who are ready to shun the world and all its glory, to live a life that's glorifying unto God, to remain pristine, unsullied and immaculate to the end of time. What's so common is guys who care about nothing but how to make money quickly without stress, girls who dress in skimpy cloths; almost half-naked. Cupidity;incredible and inordinate desire for wealth, arrogance;a feeling that one has 'arrived', disobedience to parents, examination malpractice due to laziness on the part of the students, prostitution, lasciviousness, clubbing etc are some of the King's food.
Who is this king? It's no other person than Devil himself. His food is enticing but when you eat it, you've eaten poison. Daniel chose to feed on what the majority called a bland diet. Just within ten days, he was better off than those who fed on the King's food. The King's food is poisonous to the body, to the soul and to the spirit. Devil entices us with worldly pleasures, he makes everything looks so sweet and delicious. He's actually poisoning us. His food is a sweet poison. You eat it, you perish. Eating a diet like what Daniel ate took a lot of determination. There were tendencies for the aroma from the King's food to likely entice Daniel and his friends. But they stood their ground, they refused to be moved by the aroma. They've seen beyond the physical, they were cognizant of the end result. They chose to remain unsullied and spotless. They chose not to defile themselves. They chose what everybody considered to be an insipid diet. It took a lot of grace.
Imagine you're at a dinner. There are lots of delicious delicacies with sweet aromas. You didn't touch any of this, instead you opted for something like vegetables, forgoing the delicious fried chicken, roasted turkey, rice etc. It's seems like a crazy thing to do. But that's what Daniel did. He knew the sweet delicacies were nothing but sweet poison.
Youths, God is calling forth to you today. Provided you're still alive, you still have hope. It's not too late to abandon the King's food. It's not too late to abandon all worldly pleasures and follow Christ. It might look like a hard thing to do but when you look beyond the present, you'll see that it really worth it. Following Jesus is everything. You will be persecuted, taunted, insulted, but you have hope for eternal life. Are you going to forgo eternity for ephemeral and mundane things or are you going to stand like Daniel and say NO to the King's food, NO to the devil? It's a choice you have to make.
Jesus loves you. Do not heed the lies of the devil. He's scheming, planning ways he'd use to truncate your destiny, destroy God's plans for your life, make a mess out of your life. Are you going to let him do it? Or are you going to give Jesus a chance to change your life for good? The ball is in your court.
Are you ready to forgo that handsome boyfriend or that beautiful girlfriend of yours for Jesus? Are you going to give him a chance in your life? Are you ready to forgo that unholy job of yours? The end time is now. Christ's second coming is imminent. Do not take this with levity. It's a serious issue between life and death. It deals with your ETERNITY. The bible says there's a way that seemeth right unto man but the end of it, is destruction.
Are you going to say YES to Jesus? Tomorrow might be too late. Have you considered what would happen if you die now? Are you going to play around with your eternity all in the name of the common social norms? Guys, girls, think deeply. Jesus is coming back whether you like it or not.
