|Miles|
Three months earlier
"Miles? Miles! Miles, get up! There's no sleeping in my class!"
I bolted upright and faced my Algebra teacher Ms. Tart. "Detention! All week!"
I groaned. "C'mon, Ms. Tart! Don't be like that! Why don't we just forget all this ever happened, I'll be on my way, you'll be on yours..."
She scoffed at me. "Yeah, nice try, Mr. Hollingsworth. I'll see you later this afternoon."
I pushed myself up out of my chair and grabbed my bag, hustling out the door before she could give me anymore punishment. "What happened to you?" Chewy asked as he followed me out of the classroom. I rolled my eyes. "Detention. For a week!"
Chewy hissed and held the door open for me as we entered the gym. "Ouch, that's kind of harsh. Well, I guess that's what you get for sleeping in class so much."
"I can't help it, man," I said, pushing the locker room door open. "I've been so tired lately... its like my body doesn't want to stay awake."
"Maybe you need to sleep more at night."
"What I need is a pick-me-up. You know, something to keep me awake."
"You mean, like... drugs?"
I hesitated. "No, not like drugs. I'm not going back down that road again, I told you. I don't know, just something to keep me lifted."
"Like drugs."
I sighed. "Chewy, I'm not doing that kind of stuff anymore, I promise."
He hesitated. "If you say so. Now, let's wreck this soccer game!"
I gave him a nasty look. "Ew."
I've always loved detention.
Said no one.
Detention has been like swimming in the pool during summertime for me: it seems like I'm always in it and I can't ever stay out of it.
I dragged my feet as I made my way over to Ms. Tart's class. "Glad you decided to show up." she said as I walked through the door. "And fifteen minutes late, may I add," a familiar voice said. I sighed and turned the girl who simultaneously made and ruined my life.
"Mm, Esme! How nice to see you again," I said sarcastically.
"Hey, don't be mad at me. Let's not forget who left who."
"Hey!" Ms. Tart interrupted. "I've got no time for your ridiculous teenage problems. Now, I'm going to run to the bathroom, you two stay put."
She shuffled out of the room as I sat down across the room from Esme. As soon as the door shut, she was out of her desk making her way over to me.
"Miles, Miles, Miles. Long time no see. How've you been?"
"Look, Esme, I told you already, I can't hang out with you anymore. You're a bad influence."
She laughed. "Is that what they're telling you now? I'm a bad influence? Oh, I've heard it all before: I'm an enabler, a bad influence, etcetera etcetera. You don't really believe that do you?" She sat on my desk and grabbed my face, making me look at her. I tried to pull my face away, but her grip was too strong.
"Ez, you got me addicted to drugs. Your the one who gave me the pills in the first place."
"But your the one who took them."
She moved her thumbs in circles on my cheeks. "Besides, I know you miss me."
"Mmm..." I sighed, closing my eyes. This did feel pretty good. I shook my head, pushing her hands away. "Ez, don't you already have a boyfriend?"
