~Chapter Four - You Look Like You've Seen A Ghost~

“Hey, do you think I should go with satin or silk?”

“Do you think the plunging neckline is a little too much?”

“Do you think I should splurge and get the matching earrings or just use the ones I already have?”

I stared out the window at the passersby, tapping my fingers absentmindedly against the glass. Normally I would’ve been fully into this conversation, contributing my opinions and telling them that of course silk was the better option, the neckline made her look like she belonged on a street corner, and that she could save a good two-hundred dollars on those earrings if she wore the simple swinging diamond ones she already had.

But, for some reason, my heart wasn’t into it, and I couldn’t muster up any words.

Hayley chattered on beside me, answering my questions since she knew I wasn’t in the mood, all while complaining about my brother while they were in the middle of changing so that we could occupy ourselves.

“Do you know what he said to me?” Hayley told me once Gabbi, Emma and Beth had left to change into more prom dresses for us to judge. “He came up to me and asked me why I went out with Aaron Thursday night. Like he gets the chance to dictate who I date!”

Maybe it was because of Finn that I couldn’t be my normal self. All I could think about were his eyes, so green and daring and beautiful.

“So I told him that it was none of his business, and he asked me if I loved Aaron. It’s one date! How could I know if I love him yet? And you wanna know the worst part? The worst part is that even though Aaron is the perfect boy and everything, and your brother is a total jerk—no offence, by the way—Ryan still makes my heart beat faster than Aaron can.”

Or maybe it was his skin, the perfect color and shade, toned and tanned and strong and clean. He looked almost like a soldier, standing tall and uniformed and perfect.

“But Ryan just won’t say anything to me unless he’s telling me how disappointed he is at my taste in guys. It’s kinda like, ‘Yeah, I must have horrible taste to be interested in you!’ Do you know how frustrating it is? No, I guess not, since you have Lucas and everything. He’s so perfect, and you guys are so cute, and Lucas would never put you through that…”

Or maybe it was his perfect muscles. I definitely hadn’t missed those when he visited last night, the way his biceps bulged under his shirt, so tantalizingly strong and beautiful…

“How do you do it, Lacey? How do you keep a man like that? Lacey? Lacey, are you listening to me? Lacey!”

There was just something about him so magical and enchanting and addictive that he plagued my mind, stinging my brain like a million tiny hornets.
