"Please don't let anything happen to them!" Kayla sobbed into Michael's shirt.
At that moment Michael felt ashamed for bringing her into his life. Besides having a mild form of PTSD from the traumatic events during the four months they were together, she'd already lost her father to cancer prior to their relationship.
You would be better off if we wouldn't have bumped into each other at that store.
Of course, he kept this thought to himself because it was too late now. Still, a part of him was starting to believe the Mayor was right; his job was to protect citizens of this planet, so naturally evil had a way of finding him. Anyone he became close to was put in even more danger than normal.
Michael put his thoughts aside for a moment; Kayla needed his full attention and consideration. "You know I won't let them be harmed, Kay. Look at me," he wiped her tears away. "Carlos would have to kill me before I let something happen to any of you do you understand?"
"I don't want anything to happen to you either," she replied, sniffling.
Thirty minutes later, Sondra returned.
"Carlos wasn't there...but I had to bring your mother and sister here for their safety. They were a bit angry and scared when I told them of the situation you are in, and of our powers." Kayla and Michael listened intently as Sondra recounted the details of her conversation with a Mrs. Valerie Elaine Ford and her other daughter Victoria.
AT THE ESTATE OF VALERIE E. FORD
Mrs. Ford was just settling down in her favorite chair, in her personal library to watch a movie, when the front doorbell rang.
"Victoria can you get that please?" she called. Although she didn't look her age, her joints were not in the mood to cooperate at this time of night.
She continued to browse for movies as the front door opened.
"Mom! Someone named Sondra is here to see you about Kayla!"
She lowered the remote and picked up her purse, eyes narrowing suspiciously as she clutched the military grade pepper spray. I don't know anyone named Sondra. She thought.
"Coming dear!"
Valerie entered the foyer cautiously, sending a text to Victoria and hoping she'd get the message to call 911 if need be.
"Victoria, where are you baby?" she said, making her way slowly around to the living room. She rounded a corner in a hallway to see a very tall dark skinned woman talking to her daughter on a couch. Victoria looked up at her with a worried and puzzled expression.
"What's happened?" Valerie asked. "Are you the friend Kayla said she'd be staying with ma'am?"
"Yes," Sondra replied. "She has reason to believe that you both are in terrible danger and sent me here to protect you two. It is a pleasure to finally meet you both, she's told me so much about you! But first I must tell you exactly why I am here and take you to your daughter afterward."
"Why would we need protection? Not one of my daughters is the type to involve themselves in bad situations!"
Sondra looked at them both for a moment and asked Ms. Ford to have a seat. "This will be hard to believe. Please hear me out. I am not an officer of any kind, but a protector of sorts...a guardian, if you will. So is the man Kayla mentioned to Victoria... his name is Michael. Well, Michael had someone very obsessed with political power after him and he chose to target the person he cares about the most, which is Kayla."
