Calm Before the Storm

Mari POV

The cell was like all the rest in shape, color, and design but where the others were empty other than the occupants, this one was furnished. A simple bed and desk with a couple books sitting around gave it a lived in, homey feel. I sat in the center of the white floor and closed my eyes. I tried to calm the swirling river of knowledge that coursed through my head at dizzying speeds.

All the information had always been a burden. From a young age I couldn't help showing up people's knowledge. Not on purpose, mind you, it would just spill out.

My mind works kind of like the Midgardian device called the internet. I would think of a question or subject and my mind would give me the answer. Sometimes I can't handle the pounding of it all in my head, trying to get out.

I spent the next day in meditation, trying to clear my thoughts. The whole time, the men in the cell across the hall watched confused.

The only way to stop the flow is to think of emotions and feelings. I believe this is because you can't just know things about the ways and reasons people feel without learning through compassion, empathy, and understanding.

So I thought about how Loki might feel up on "his" throne. Satisfied, content, lonely? How I felt about him. Confused, concerned, worried.

Ouch! I gingerly touched my face. Where Loki had punched me a purple bruise had developed.

It's weird... Asgardians don't bruise. At least not from a simple punch. Though, I'm not really sure I am of Asgard.

When they found me in the woods they didn't even think twice about what my family were, just how they died. I've always suspected that I was not Asgardian because of how different I am from others. The eyes, for one. Then there's how fragile I am compared to others.

I quickly dropped my hand from my face as I heard footsteps down the hall. To avoid embarrassment, I turned away from the transparent walls, still sitting on the floor.

The steps got closer, then stopped behind me.

"You enjoying the accommodations?" Odin's voice asked.

"Loving them." I replied, closing my eyes again.

"Are you sure? Loki hated being in here." He replied.

"I think it's nice." I pulled the tie out of my hair and unraveled the braid.

"Hmm, well, you seem pretty happy for being in a cell."

I pulled my hair in front of my face to hide the bruise, then turned towards him.

Looking at him, I could see two images morphed together. One was of Loki in his full 'armor', the other was of Odin in his royal outfit. They both held the royal staff.

"I am happy. It's peaceful in here." I admit, resting my wrists on my knees.

He just raised his eyebrows and gave a smirk.

"Have you decided on an explanation to tell Thor on why I'm in here yet?" His smirk faded to a frown and creased brow. "Thor treats me like a little sister, and whether I like it or not he is defensive of me. He will be angry when he finds out." I finish, closing my eyes again.

"He is visiting Midgard at the moment, so I doubt he will be back any time soon. Being with the mortal girl makes him so happy, it is hard to tell how long he will be away."

It was silent for a minute so I opened one eye to see if he was still there. He was looking over at the staircase at the end of the hall.

That's when I heard it. The thump of heavy footsteps on hard floor. It was coming from the stairs.

The steps got louder until five large forms appeared before Loki.

They were humanoid, but unlike anything I'd seen before. They were eight feet tall, with tough, dark grey skin. The skin was bumpy like the knots of a tree and had faint, light grey swirls and lines. Their faces were crude and stern, with human features. They each wore unrefined armor in various colors of green.

"We seek the child of wisdom and sight." one said in a gruff voice.

"Why?" I ask, now standing.

"A great prophecy must be fulfilled."

"She is the one you seek." Loki tells them, gesturing towards me.

I step away from them as they look at me. Loki lets down the defenses of the cell and I am beckoned forward.

I step out into the hall and am surrounded by the odd creatures.

Loki POV

They started leading her out, so I caught the attention of the one trailing behind.

"What is this prophecy you speak of, may I ask?"

He stands a little taller and replies, "The child of wisdom and sight,

shall take those looking to the Titan of fight,

but to her judgement he may fall,

or be raised to slay them all."

With no other explanation, he left to rejoin the others like him.

At that point I had two options; follow and make sure nothing happens to Mari, or let her go and hope she doesn't raise this unknown "Titan".

Like the friend I am (or was), I followed, invisible to them.
