The cafeteria is packed.
I barely register what the lunch ladies throw on my tray as I scan the room for Allison. The only class we had together after English was chemistry, and we never established where to meet for lunch.
"Student ID." A monotone voice interrupts my thoughts. A heavier set, angry looking lunch lady is perched on a stool at the end of the line, taking IDs and swiping them. The familiar pangs of anxiety make my stomach churn. The guy in front of me hands her his card, and I try to quickly come up with an explanation as to why I don't have an ID. When the guy picks up his tray and leaves, the lady turns to me. Her name tag says "Maxine."
"Student ID." She holds her hand out expectantly.
"I, uh, I don't have one."
Maxine narrows her eyes. "Then why are you holding up my line?" she snarls. My eyes widen and I stumble over my words.
"I'm new, today's my first day, and I uh, I didn't um, I didn't know."
"No ID, no lunch! Get out of my line."
An arm is shoved in front of my face. "Use mine." The voice is sweet, and I turn to see the girl who smiled at me this morning. Her long brown hair frames her face, her perfect cheekbones accentuating her smile. I also recognize her from my chemistry class.
Maxine rolls her eyes and swipes the card. "You're charged for two meals. Now get out of my line." The girl grabs her ID card and shoves it in her pocket.
"Thank you." I say, picking up my tray. "You didn't have to do that."
"I would like to think that somebody would do it for me." The girl picks up her tray and laughs. "Maxine just hates, well, everything. Don't take it to heart."
I give a small laugh and immediately turn to go find a place to sit.
"Hey, do you want to sit with me?" I turn back around, surprised. "I remember what it's like being new." Seeing my hesitation, she smiles sweetly. "Come on, we don't bite."
Returning her smile, I follow her to a table in the corner where a few people are seated. I see the dark skinned girl from this morning, the cute forlorn blond boy Matt, and a younger boy with light brown hair. The dark skinned girl and the blond boy are also in my chemistry class.
The girl sets her tray down between the dark skinned girl and Matt. "Guys, this is...you know, I never did get your name."
"Uh, Emma." I smile awkwardly, setting my tray down across from hers and next to the younger boy.
"I'm Elena, nice to officially meet you." She smiles again, and I relax, enjoying her friendliness and perky attitude. "This is Bonnie," Elena points to the dark skinned girl who gives me a big smile, and then points to the blond boy. "This is Matt."
Matt gives a small wave, "Hey."
"And this is my little brother Jeremy." The younger boy sitting next me shyly smiles and turns back to his food. "He's friendly, I promise." Elena grins as Jeremy flicks a French fry at her.
I laugh along with everybody else, feeling at ease. In San Diego, people are never this friendly.
"You're in our chem class, aren't you?" Bonnie asks.
"Yeah." I say with a smile.
Matt laughs. "What do you think of Harris?"
"A total douche." I say without hesitation. Buzz Cut and my brother were also in that class, and the teacher, Mr. Harris, seems to take great pleasure in humiliating the two of them.
