My first instinct is to run.
But my legs won't move, no matter how much my brain screams at them to. I can only sit in a pile of dead leaves and sticks with a dumbfounded expression on my face, my eyes moving back and forth between Derek and Scott. It's almost as if my brain knows that I have to stay and hear the truth, no matter how terrifying it is.
My brother, a werewolf.
A hand is shoved in front of my face, and I slowly look up to see a half-naked Derek standing in front of me. My face grows hot and I turn away, opting instead to look at Scott. Derek pauses for a moment before backing up a few steps.
"So, not on drugs." I say, still in a state of shock and disbelief. Now I turn to Derek, hardly daring to look him in the eyes. "Not a drug dealer."
Derek pauses from his brooding to give me a small smile before turning expectantly at Scott. I follow his gaze to my brother, who is still lying propped up against the tree.
"What-why are you both looking at me?"
"Are you going to explain?" Derek dips his head towards me.
"What? No, you-you're better at it."
"You're her brother."
"And you-"
"Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up!" I throw my hands in the air in exasperation and grit my teeth. I take a deep breath and release it, slowly looking up between Derek and Scott. "Somebody better start explaining. Now."
Derek lets out a breath and crosses his arms. "I take it you know what we are."
I slowly nod my head. "Y-yeah. But how?"
"I'm a werewolf by birth." Derek nods towards Scott. "Your brother was bitten by an Alpha."
"An Alpha?" I raise my eyebrow.
Derek nods solemnly, staring at the ground. "An Alpha is the leader of a pack. He's the strongest and most powerful. The bite of an Alpha results in the curse."
Scott whips his head around. "You told me it was a gift."
Derek pauses before slowly turning to look at Scott. "Gift." He corrects, straightening up. "The bite is a gift."
Scott slumps his shoulders. I scoff, fixing Derek with my best angry face. "A gift? So, because you have this 'gift', you think it's okay to go around killing people?"
Derek narrows his eyes at me. "We're not killing people."
"You're not the ones killing people?" I say, my voice laced with disbelief.
"No." Derek sighs. "The Alpha is."
"Okay, so who's the Alpha?"
"We don't know." Derek grits his teeth.
"Okay." I slowly nod my head. "Okay. Um." I pause and clear my throat, a million questions on my tongue. "You guys don't like, eat people's hearts, do you?" I tentatively ask.
Derek looks amused, and Scott just looks confused. "Wha-no, of course not!" He sputters.
I throw my hands up in defense. "Okay, sorry. I watch too much Supernatural." I shrug.
Now it's Derek's turn to look confused. "What?"
"Uh, nothing." I awkwardly smile. "Is there anything else I'm missing?"
Derek and Scott share a quick side glance. "No."
I narrow my eyes at Derek. "You're lying."
"You don't need to know."
