“Everyone has that one person for them, and it seems I’m the only one who doesn’t.”
The bus bounces violently trying to shake off the dirt and snow clumps forming on the slick wheels. I hold my pen tightly trying to write in the journal I received from my birthday. I loved this journal dearly, it was my escape from reality; no one could bother me. Seeing the old school in the distance I close my journal clutching it close to my chest.
“I’d be in deep shit if I lose this.” I mumble to myself.
“You’ll be in shit if you lose that?”
Turning my head I see a girl with bouncy blonde curls staring at me with big blue eyes. I look out the window pretending I didn’t hear her. The girl suddenly slides over into my seat, her blue eyes dancing as they stare into mine. She holds out a small white hand expecting me to take it. Hesitantly I take it in mine and shake it slowly. What does she want from me? She cocks her head to the side in curiosity.
“Whatchu’ thinking about?” she stares into my eyes again making me flush.
I frantically wave my hands around in her face to symbolize that it was nothing. She nods smiling and reaches for her bag setting it gently on her shoulder. It was pink with jewels set in random spots; I roll my eyes at the sight. Pathetic. I slide my jacket on my arms and I look over to see the girl watching me closely. I clear my throat waiting to hear what she wants. She lowers her gaze to my bag and suddenly frowns. Smiling and beaming with pride I point my finger to it and begin telling my story.
“Found it at a murder, it must have been the bag a man was strangled with.”
Her lips curl into a peculiar smile.
“That’s cool!”
Staring at her in disbelief the bus soon stops in front of the rusting school. Finally! My safe zone! I stand up impatiently trying to push my way up farther in the crowded aisle. I feel my hand become warmer and I look down at it. The blonde girl’s fingers were entwined with mine. I stop waiting for her to let go; she never did. I trudge up the stairs to the front door of the school with the girl tagging along behind me like a puppy. She was basically up my ass; I snicker at the thought. I begin to become annoyed by her presence and spin around till I’m face to face with her.
“Are you going to follow me around everywhere?” I snap at her.
She looked stunned and jerks her arm back afraid I’d hit her.
“Is that bad?”
“Well, you mine as well know I’m unwanted! You don’t want to follow me around!”
She giggles at my words closing her eyes and throwing her head back cackling loudly. I stare at her admirably. How can she pull that off? If I did that I’d look like a total idiot.
“Unwanted?” she coughs out between giggles.
I turn and begin to walk away embarrassed at her uncontrolled cackling. I can hear her pink flats tapping the ground as she chases after me. She reaches for my hand again and I slap my forehead at her actions.
“Why do you keep trying to hold my hand?” I stop so she is looking straight at me.
“Because I like you.” She spurts out smiling.
“You like me?”
“Yeah! You seem all dark and mysterious; always a mystery.”
I stare at her, the words running through my mind over and over. Dark and mysterious? Her bright tan face stares into my pale broken out skin.
“You’re not from here are you?”
She shakes her head and takes out a picture from her bag. A large white mansion fills the paper; pink flowers line the sides of the building making it look sophisticated and lively. I stare at her with a disgusted look on my face.
“You don’t like it?” Her lip curls down to look pouty.
Before I could answer the minute bell rings and I turn my gaze to the speaker lying in the corner.
“I better get going.” I look back to her but I find she’s not there.
I shrug and hurry off to my class desperate to get this day over with.
