Something wasn't right. It didn't feel right. I laid in my bed and heard all of the commotion running through the house. It was too noisy. It was too loud. It's never that loud. It was as if we were a happy family.I rubbed my eyes and sat up in the bed. I remembered that I woke up from sleeping last night, showered and packed all of the things that I could. Great! I grabbed my tooth brush and went on to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I looked at myself in the mirror. I washed my face. I heard this voice in my head as the towel laid over my eyes and I just knew that it couldn't be true. I snatched the towel away so fast to see if just maybe it was a trick being played on me. Maybe I was hearing things. I cleaned my ears out to see if I could hear it again.
"This can't be happening." I said out loud. I finished my routine as quick as possible and went back into my room, still hearing the commotion downstairs. I put my toothbrush back in my bag along with the rest of my money. I zipped my bag up, changed my clothes and went to look for my baseball bat in my closet. I took it out and looked at the patch in my closet. "She must be stupid." I was infuriated. Why would she do this?
I walked downstairs, as I did, I saw them. All of them! Sitting down together like a family-- and a happy one at that. My eyes widened. Then they all looked at me. My mom's big, wide smile turned upside down. "Good morning baby," she said as she sipped from her coffee. "It's about time you woke up."
"Don't you 'Good Morning baby,' me! You haven't done that since I was seven. Don't act now!" It was quiet as they all waited for me to say something else. The only thing I could do was stare. The life that was inside of me, left as I looked into the eyes of such a evil spirit. I stared at the devil that was in my house. He had a smirk on his face and his hand on Bailey's leg as she kicked them back and forth while eating her breakfast. "What the he-- what are you doing??" I asked him.
"I'm sitting down, what it look like?"
"It looks like you're somewhere you're not invited! And why do you have your hand on my sister's leg!"
He laughed. "Obviously, I was invited. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. And this is my daughter. I can do whatever I want to her!"
"NO! No you can not!!" I yelled. I was getting to the point where I wanted to jump this guy. My fists were already clenched and ready for war.
He laughed again. "I wish you would stop blaming me because you're gay. It's not my fault,"
I walked a little bit closer to him. "What'd you just say?"
"Ronald, don't pay him any attention." My mom told him.
"Shut the fuck up!!! This isn't about you! Now what did you just say!" I yelled back to Ronald.
He got up from the table and walked towards me. "First of all, you're not going to disrespect your mother while I'm here, you got that punk!" He pointed in my face. I was still sizing him up. I wasn't backing down.
"She ain't got no respect for me; I'm not respecting her!"
"You need to calm your lil gay ass down!"
"What?! If anybody is gay it's you and you know it. Don't try to blame your problems on me!" I pushed him and walked over to my scared ass mother. "A 'woman' who lets a man put his hands on her and takes him back is not a woman! I freaking hate you right now! Why do you have to be so stupid!" I turned away from her and ran upstairs to get my stuff.
Today is the day I get the hell out of here.
As I was zipping up my bag, Bailey came running up the stairs to my room. She closed the door behind her. "I wanna come with you." She told me.
"Get some stuff and come on." I told her while gathering my things.
I waited for her to come back in my room with her things. After that, we headed downstairs but only to be stopped by my mom. "Where y'all going?"
We kept walking. I gripped Bailey's hand tighter trying to get out of the house with her pulling Bailey away from me but Ronald got in front of the door to stop us.
"You're not taking my baby with you!" She yelled.
I rolled my eyes. "Right because you only have one child,"
"I don't wanna stay without Bryan!"
"You're not going Bailey! That's final!"
"If he's staying here, she's not!" I said as I pointed to Ronald. He had this sick ass smirk on his face.
"She's is!" She took Bailey away from me while I wasn't paying attention. Bailey instantly started crying.
"What are you doing?" I asked her.
"She's not going anywhere with you!"
"She's not staying here with her unfit mother!"
We both grabbed a arm and begin to play tug of war with her. Bailey cried and screamed for me to get her away from our mother but she was really pulling her hard and I didn't want to hurt Bailey anymore. Ronald stepped in and snatched Bailey from the both of us. "She's staying here. You can go wherever you want.. But without Bailey."
"Bryan, don't leave me." Bailey cried.
"If you touch my sister, I swear to God I'll kill you!"
"Not if you're in jail.."
I was so pissed. So pissed I could cry. I just left because I wanted to do some real damage. I walked all the way to my apartment and got settled in. I'm really nervous about leaving Bailey there, so I pulled out the old house phone we had and plugged it into the wall so I could call Paige. I needed her to check on Bailey from time to time and keep an eye out on the house.
"Alright, um... I will." She told me.
"What?"
"Your dad freaks me out, Bryan."
"Did he say something to you?!" I asked in anger. I was scared of her answer.
"Yeah," she said weirdly.
"What!"
"He said that I've grown up and turned into a beautiful young lady and then he winked at me. Then he said I was sexy, just like my mama."
This dude was really blowing me. I rubbed my forehead and tried to remain calm but I knew I wouldn't. "You know what Paige, don't call. Don't go outside if he's there. Tell you're mom to take you to school! Don't talk to him or anything do you understand?"
"Okay."
"I'm serious, Paige!!"
"Okayyy, Bryan."
"Okay, be careful." I hung up before she could ask or say anything else. I'm nervous. Better yet scared.
It was 3 a.m. and my phone was ringing. My heart started beating really fast. I ran to get the phone. "Hello?"
"Bryan, I - I think something's wrong."
"What do you mean?" I said, rubbing my eyes.
"The lights are still on in your house.."
"Okay?"
"In your room.."
I tried to think. Why would my light be on? Maybe Bailey was in there because she missed me? Or maybe it was Ronald putting more drugs in my closet.
"Bryan, what's going on?"
"It's nobody but my da-- Ronald, I'm sure."
"Oh... What's with you two?"
"Uh, shouldn't you be asleep? Don't you like have school in the morning?"
"Yeah, but I--"
"You do. Goodnight, Paige." I hung up on her again. I know she was getting sick and tired of that.
I started to think of all the things he could be doing. I'm gonna do everything in my power to send his ass back to jail-- who even knew he got out! I just can't help but think about Bailey and the fact that he's there with her. I gotta get her from him. I'll make it my business to go there later.
