"I think I'm falling in love with you."

"You can't be."

She scoffs. "What do you mean, 'I can't?'"

"You don't love me," he snaps. "You can't be in love with me. There is absolutely nothing to love about me, and you should know that."

"Calum, I-"

"No, shut up!" He whips his head around to look at her. "Can't you see that I am bad for you? You should be leaving me. You shouldn't care about me."

"Calum, I'm not leaving you."

He laughs sarcastically at her reply. "God, Hallie - everybody leaves in the end. You're just too stupid to realize that. You live in a perfect world with a perfect family but you need to wake up because the world isn't perfect and not everybody can live an amazing life like you! You're so fucking naive!"

They've spent countless nights in silence before, but those nights were never like this.

This time, the silence feels weird and upsetting and just wrong, and he knows it's all his fault.

"My life isn't perfect." She says, her voice steady but cold. "I've struggled too, Calum, and you know that. I can't believe you would say something like that."

"I'm sorry," he says quietly, a whisper she could only faintly hear. He clasps his hands together. "I didn't mean it-"

"Oh, I know you meant it," she says, her eyes finally meeting his for the first time tonight.

"Are you angry?"

She moves her head in response, but not enough for him to tell if it was a yes or no.

"Sorry." He whispers again, and he feels tears burn behind his eyelids. "I'm just - I dunno. I've been having such shitty days lately."

"The only way to feel better is if you talk about it, you know."

"I know."

"..."

"..."

"I meant what I said, though. About me falling for you." Hallie says as she grabs his hand and holds onto it tightly. "I don't think I've ever felt this way about anybody else, Calum, and it hurts knowing you don't feel the same."

"I do." Calum says, voice strained. "I care about you so fucking much and I'm just afraid because I don't know how to let you help me. I'm really messed up, okay? I know that. You couldn't love me if you tried."

"Okay, so tell me," she says eventually. "Why do you have to shut everyone who cares about you out all the time?"

He laughs, but it's a bitter sound.

"It's called common sense, sweetheart -" he says, his voice tightly laced with pain, "Those who are heartless once cared a little too much."
