Chapter One (Meeting Hadley Fisker)

I woke up to loud screaming and I immediately knew my brother and father were fighting. I slowly got out of bed and walked into the kitchen where they were both standing pointing fingers at each other.

"I was trying to sleep." I said annoyed and sat down at the counter waiting to hear their sides of the story. "He came home after midnight." My father said glaring at my brother who glared right back an crosses his arms over his chest.

"Yeah and he is twenty years old." I said and my brother Aiden stood behind me. "And he is living under my roof there for he must follow my rules. " my father said walking out the room and into his bedroom slamming the door closed. I rolled my eyes and turned to my smirking brother.

"Aiden seriously! Where were you this time?" I asked. "Trying to find some money to pay the monthly bills, we don't have enough for this month and we already owe the bank for the loan from last month." He said running his fingers through his thick brown hair. "What do you want me to do? I asked.

"Right now I want you to get ready for school and do well on your exams. You can help me when you get home and I don't want you worrying about all this while you taking your midterm exams." He said turning around and picking up a cup of coffee from the counter and handing it to me. "Thanks." I said walking out the kitchen with my coffee to my room. I took a glance at the clock and I saw I still two hours before I had to be a school. I drank my coffee while cleaning my room and setting out my clothes for the day.

I chose a pair of jean shorts and a blue long sleeve shirt that complimented my blue eyes. I also got out my only pair of black vans and had a quick shower. I washed my dark brown hair and my fair skin and then jumped out and dried my hair with a towel and threw my clothes on. Then I applied some black eyeliner to my eyes and some lip gloss and ran out my room swinging my backpack over my shoulder. I was running down the stairs and putting my shoes on at the same time, while my brother just watched me and laughed.

“Don’t laugh at me, when you actually had a car to go in when you were a senior.” I said running out the house and slamming the door behind me. I started the long walk to school by pulling out my iPod and headphones and played some music. I had tuned out everything, the noise of the cars passing me, the soft rustle of the leaves blowing in the wind, the barking of dogs. I just tuned out the world and walked to school in peace.

I arrived at school just before the bell rang and I quickly made my way to my first exam, Science. Not one of my greater subjects, but I tried my hardest. I sat down in my seat at the back and took out my pencils and paper. As I waited for the teacher to come more students started to file into the room taking up each and every seat except for the one next to mine, that was usually empty every class period. I never understood why no one liked me, I wasn’t mean to them or anything, I just wasn’t like them.

I has started to doodle on my paper when the teacher walked in and started to explain the rules for the exam. It was the usual common sense they always told us, but I listened anyway. “No electronics until you done. No looking at the person next to. No talking.” The teacher said writing the rules on the board. I continued doodling on my paper while she started to do attendance.

“Jonathan?” “Present.” “Emily?” “Here.” “Drake?” “Sup Mrs. Goldberg.” Everyone laughed and I just shook my head hiding my laughter. “Hadley?” “Hi.” I said and she nodded and continued down the list of names. “No Baxter I see.” She said and started to hand out the scantron’s.

The girl in front of me turned around and handed me mine. “Good luck, Hadley.” She said smiling. “Thanks Emily! You too.” I said smiling back. Mrs Goldberg was about to hand out the actual exam when the door flew open and a very flustered Baxter walked in. “I’m so sorry Mrs. Goldberg. I had to take my little sister and brother to school.” He rushed out and she nodded her head in understanding.
