Chapter Six (Mine)
I held her as she cried for her stolen happiness. We sat in the back of my Ford F150 red truck. She was curled up into chest, her hands grasping onto shirt tightly. Her phone was ringing uncontrollably. She lifted her head up, looking up at me.
Her eyes were bright red, black lines streaming down her face. She was sniffling quietly. “What time is it?” I looked at the time on the screen in the front of the car. 1:00 am was flashing in bright white. “It’s one in the morning.” She shot up gasping when she looked at the screen for confirmation.
We were an hour past her curfew and I was half an hour past mine. My parents were going to be mad, but they trusted me and once I explained the situation I was in they wouldn’t be hard on the punishment, but I would be in a little of trouble. “My dad's going to be so mad, I n- need to call him. I - I don’t know what I’m going to tell him.” She stuttered nervously.
“Let me talk to him.” She shook her head quickly. “N- no. He w- won't let me see you anymore. He’ll h- hate m - me.” More tears poured out her beautiful eyes, as she trembled in my arms. “Don’t worry about it.” I felt her phone vibrate once more and took it out of her bag, that she clutching tightly.
“Hadley where the hell are you!” Her father demanded furiously. “Mr. Fisker Hadley’s with me and I am terribly sorry that she is late. We ran into a few problems at the party and had to talk it out. We, no I lost track of time and will have her home within the hour.” He didn’t reply for a minute.
“Is she alright?” He asked quietly. I looked down noticing her eyes closed, and her breathing evened out. She had fallen asleep. “Physically she is fine. Emotionally she isn’t. She’s been crying for the past two hours.” Aidan's voice started cursing in the background.
“Drive home safely, I will talk with you once you arrive. Also give me your parents phone number I need to explain to them why their son is out so late, I’m sure Aiden could lend you some clothes and you could spend the night here in his room.”
“Thank you sir.” I rattled off my father’s number knowing my mother would have gone to be a long time ago, my father always stayed up late working and waiting for me. I was surprised he hadn’t called to ask where I was.
Cradling Hadley in my arms I strapped her to the passenger seat before walking around the front of the car and getting in the drivers side. I arrived at her house sometime later, holding her in my arms as she continued to sleep her head laying on my shoulder.
“You can take her upstairs to her room, first door on the right.” Aiden opened the door, his expression grim. A small smile curved his lips when he saw Hadley sleeping peacefully in my arms. I nodded before walking past him, being careful not to jostle Hadley as I walked up the stairs.
Once I was back downstairs I took a seat on the couch opposite Aiden and Mr. Fisker. “Your father said it was okay to stay the night.” Mr. Fisker began, looking anywhere but me. “Thank you sir.”
Aiden stood up, pacing the small area. “What the hell happened?” He exclaimed. “Hadley didn’t want me to tell you guys, she was worried you would hate her.” Aiden and Mr. Fisker shared a look. “Is it drugs?” Aiden blurted out. “No, nothing as bad as that. She was hired by the popular girl in our grade to break my heart. Taylor the girl, was going to pay her a lot of money to break my heart.”
“She accepted the offer didn’t she?” Aiden asked brokenly. I nodded. “It’s all my fault. She thinks she needs to help pay the bills, she even got a job.” Mr, Fisker ran his hands through his graying hair. “She told Taylor her fortune tonight and told me that she didn’t want to break my heart, because she actually had feelings for me. Taylor and her went back and forth firing insults, a number of people heard.
Taylor was heart the most, but everything is finally taking a toll on Hadley. She’s never been able to cry and have comfort. I’ve watched her for years. I used to be one of your friends Aiden, I’ve known her practically my whole life, and I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her.”
“Why don’t you and Aiden go to bed, we can continue this conversation with Hadley in the morning?” Mr. Fisker asked, but we knew better than to say no. We got up saying a brief goodnight before making our way to his room, right across from Hadley’s.
“Thanks.” Aiden muttered in the dark, ten minutes later. “For what?” I asked staring at the ceiling. “Protecting my baby sister when I couldn’t. I knew you always had the hots for her, when we were in school.” He chuckled quietly. “Your not going to keep us apart?” I asked.
“She needs you, more than you’ll ever know.” “I think I do, but I need her too.” We fell asleep after that.
I awoke the next morning, borrowing a brand new toothbrush that Aiden had a stash of in his bathroom. I left his room, in a pair of his sweatpants, crossing the short distance to Hadley’s room. I knocked softly before hearing her quiet “come in.”
I entered her room, smiling. She was still in bed, staring at the whole, covered with pictures of her family and friends. “I told her brother and father everything, they aren’t mad.” She nodded, not even sparing me a glance. “Hallie what’s wrong, baby?” She turned to me tears rolling down her cheeks.
I climbed onto the bed, holding out my arms. She curled into them. “I really miss my mom.” She sobbed. “I know it’s hard. I’ll be here, whenever you need me.” “I really need someone to hold me, and take all the pain away, I need to forget.” I shook my head.
“Forgetting will never make you feel any better.” She slowly nodded. “Hadley I want you to be mine. All mine.” She was quiet, her body still.
“I want to be yours, Baxter. I really do, you make me happy and I only want to be happy.” A smile formed on her lips, her once tear filled eyes lit up. “I’m going to make you the happiest girl alive.” “I’m holding you to that, Bax.”
I leaned forward kissing her lips gently, sealing the silent promise.
A/N : The end, I only planned for this to be a short story. Hope you all enjoyed
