Chapter Three (Plan A)

I guess things changed for the better. At first it was strange, for starters my father woke me up on Sunday morning with breakfast in bed. A complete egg, bacon, and toast type of breakfast. I was pretty surprised to see my father and brother getting along so greatly, after seeing them resent each other for so long. It all felt like a dream, a very good dream, that I never wanted to end.

We spent the whole day together, watching movies, and spending time together as a family. If felt good to be able to confide in someone other than my diary, that held my darkest moments, days where I didn’t want to be strong for them and to just give up. I told my brother and father about those days, and why I felt that way.

In the end they felt horrible for the way they had made me grow up in such a short amount of time, but I didn’t know anything different so it was okay, I didn’t mind not having a normal life like the other girls at me school. I wasn’t a normal person, so my life shouldn’t be normal.

It was now Monday morning and I was more than nervous, for I had to make a plan. A plan to get to Baxter to fall for me. I had to act hard to get, and not interested in him. I had to break his heart, and would probably end up breaking mine in the process, but who cares, not Taylor Banks, nor Baxter who was probably in for another quick lay.

Well he sure as hell wouldn’t be getting any from me. I got ready, trying to look as pretty as I could on a Monday morning and let Aiden drive me to school. We arrived a few minutes later than I usually did, I jumped out of the car, hoping to avoid the looks of my fellow students.

“Do you need a ride after school?” He asked through the open window. “No thanks, I find a ride, don’t worry about me.” I said turning around with one more final goodbye. I ignored the whispers and the walked into the white building to my locker. A few people from outside followed me in, to annoy me. I pretended to be oblivious hoping they would get the point, but they just kept following and whispering horrible true and false things about me.

“You know I heard her father is a drunk?” One girl whispered rather loudly. “I heard her brother tried to rape her.” Another whispered. “How about the fact that she’s dirt poor since her mother died?” Tears started to brim over at this point. “Or that she was the one who killed her mother?” A boy snickered.

I turned around and glared at the group of people. “How about the fact that all people can do at this school is gossip about other people when their lives are no better?” I asked my voice strained. They watched me with wide eyes. “Yeah now you're silent.” I muttered turning around and walking into someone’s chest.

“Hey what happened?” Baxter asked looking down me, I was now crying softly just thinking about my mother, and how the whole school thought I was the reason she died. Or that they thought my brother was abusive. “Ask them.” I whispered pointing to the fear stricken group as they took in Baxter’s towering form.

“Nothing Baxter, don’t listen to her, she’s just upset that we know the truth.” One of the boys said. I turned around, tears now long gone. I stormed up to him and drew my hand back and slapped him right across the face. The noise echoing around us. “Don’t you ever talk about my family again.” I ground out. He nodded fearfully, with a hand to his now red cheek.

The group then scurried away. “I don’t need you to fix my problems Baxter.” He smirked at me, and leaned against my locker. “I can see that, Hadley.” He replied in the same tone as me. “Just go to class, I need some time to cool off.” I muttered resting my head on my now closed locker.

How could I have been so stupid, slapping that boy? If my brother and father found out, they would be disappointed, but my mother would be proud. What if the boy goes to the principal? I’m in so much trouble.
