Chapter Four (My Way)
So maybe the fact that Aiden took me to school, and personally walked me to the principals office was irritating. He sat beside me, as I retold the story from Monday morning to my principal, who also was my brother’s principle. All the people from my story had a weeks suspension and I now was told to come back if there was any more problems.
“I can’t believe you did that!” I whispered following Aiden out of the office. “I’m just protecting you.” He defended. “You don’t need to protect to me, I slapped the guy across the face.” “Addie, I can’t be here during the day to protect you, like I want to, but I can try.” “People are going to talk about me even more now.”
“I won’t let them.” A familiar voice echoed in the silent hall. “Damnit.” I muttered turning around to face Baxter. “Who are you?” Aiden asked shooting me a pointed glare. “A friend, I hope.” I snickered, noticing Aiden glare at Baxter. “I certainly hope not.” “Aiden, stop.”
“Please I don’t want you to fight. You weren’t in class and I was worried, because I saw you walk in earlier, I overheard your conversation with your brother, and I just wanted to reassure him, that I wouldn’t let anything happen to you.” “Addie?” Aiden asked looking in between Baxter and I.
“Don’t even try giving me the damn talk, I am nearly eighteen, and no he is not my boyfriend. We recently started to talk, so no worries dear brother, no one is trying to take advantage of me.” I snickered, watching Baxter’s gaping form. “I’m a guy Addie, and I know how they think, including him.” He pointed his finger at Baxter.
“Hey, I don’t see your sister that way!” Baxter started before his eyes widened. “That came out wrong! Hallie your beautiful, but I don’t see you as a quick lay or whatever you call it.” I laughed, trying to hide my blush. “Aiden go home, I have to go to class. “ I urged pushing him towards the door.
“I’m going to talk to you soon.” He said glaring at Baxter before turning to me. “Be careful, please.” “Always. Now leave.” We both laughed as he left the building leaving me alone with Baxter.
“So I get a nickname, huh?” I asked walking past him to go to my locker. “Yeah, if you don’t mind it.” “Nah, it’s cool, I like nicknames.” “So you're close with your brother?” He asked nervously. “If you're referring to the rumours circling this school I’m going to hurt you.” “No of course not, I remember following your brother around in my freshmen year, he’s a great man.”
“Yeah, we are really close, especially since our mother’s de-” “Hey it’s okay, you don’t have to talk about it. I’ve lost a parent too, and I know it’s hard.” “So history next?” I asked trying to change the topic. “Yeah, we can walk together.”
I needed to talk to Taylor about this agreement, because I knew I couldn’t go through with it anymore. I was falling for Baxter, I couldn’t break his heart, without breaking mine in the process, and mine was still mending, it couldn’t be broken again, betrayed.
“Hey you alright?” Baxter asked standing in front of me. I blinked a few times before answering him. “Are you going to the party this weekend?” I asked tentatively. “Yeah, do you want to go together?” I nodded quickly as the bell rang, people coming out of nowhere and pushing past us. His hand found mine as we walked the rest of the way to history, and I didn’t miss the satisfied look from Taylor as we passed.

“Taylor I need to talk to you.” I murmured standing beside her locker. “Bathroom.” She hissed, throwing me a dirty look. I silently walked into the girls bathroom. “What?” She snapped. “I’m done.” I said looking her in the eye. “I’m sorry, but what did you say?” She asked smirking. “I said, I am done. I don’t know why I even agreed to do this in the first place. You are a bitch and I am not your slave.” Her mouth fell slack for a moment before she started to cackle like a freaking witch.
“You are done, when I say so.” I shook my head. “No, I am done now. I will not do anything you ask me.” “I will tell everyone about your financial issue and make up horrible rumors.” She threatened, but I laughed. “Go ahead, I have no friends anyway, maybe you should tell people the real reason you actually have friends.”
“I have friends because people actually like me.” She snickered. “No you have friends because you can pay them off.” I sneered, her intake of breath the last sound I heard. The sharp sound of her hand slapping my face echoed in the bathroom. “You little conniving bitch. Who told you?” “No one. I will be doing things my way from now on, I don’t care if I don’t have any friends. At least I don’t pay people to be my friend.” I then left the bathroom looking down to cover my face.
I ignored the few looks I received in class when people noticed the red handprint on my face. “What the hell happened to your face?” Baxter asked at lunch tilting it in the light. “Long story, I’ll you about it on Friday on the way to the party.” I walked past him, deciding to have lunch in the courtyard alone.
