NIGHT 4
Bring Us Home
(DREAMER is sitting. She rises. A look of sadness in her eyes as if she can see what is about to happen. As she speaks three figures enter. One is a general, one is a soldier, both from opposite ends of the Earth, and one is a mourner shrouded in black.)
DREAMER. Murder .Fear... Load. Pull. Bang! (Pause) Peace. (Pause) Survival of the fittest. Fittest… Who is fit to live? (Pause ) Awakened passion. Fueled anger, bribed by freedom. But after taking someone else’s life, are you ever free? (Pause ) I wonder… who becomes the ghost? (Pause ) In an instant. Something breaks. Someone breaks. But this time, can the pieces ever return? (Pause) Some things never can…
( A cross hangs from GENERAL’s neck. The SOLDIER is wearing simple clothes, holding a gun in his hands awkwardly, having never killed another in his entire life. A woman, a MOURNER, remains upstage center. During monologues, the SOLDIER AND GENERAL face each other, eyes fixed on the other.)
GENERAL.
I’m a man in the land of giants.
I’m the cry of a thousand dreams.
I’m the shoulders holding a nation
High enough to still believe.
SOLDIER.
We remember the chains we carried.
Won’t forget about the day we left.
Every heart still beats with hope of a promise made
GENERAL and SOLDIER.
A promise kept.
MOURNER.
Yahweh, oh Yahweh
Bring us a new day.
GENERAL and SOLDIER.
Bring us home.
Lead us to the highest wall.
Every single stone will fall.
We have never walked alone.
Only you can bring us home.
(On opposite sides of the stage, the SOLDIER and GENERAL take one step towards each other with each measure.)
GENERAL.
No mercy in the high noon desert.
No shadow goanna block the sun.
Still covered in dust
GENERAL and SOLDIER.
From all our yesterdays and days to come.
SOLDIER.
Every turn is a new temptation.
You want to bow down to something new.
As for me and my generation we’ll serve
GENERAL.
No one but you.
MOURNER.
Yahweh, oh Yahweh
Bring us a new day.
GENERAL and SOLDIER.
Bring us home.
Lead us to the highest wall.
Every single stone will fall.
We have never walked alone.
Only you can bring us home.
SOLDIER.
Every teardrop in the sand.
GENERAL.
Longing for a distant land.
SOLDIER.
We have never walked alone.
GENERAL.
Only you can bring us home.
(MOURNER performs a mourn call into the sky.)
MOURNER.
You are fire in the night sky,
You are cloud by day.
We are calling on the name of Yahweh.
(MOURNER continues her cries and the GENERAL and SOLDIER suddenly become aware of each other. In their pivotal quest to return home, they abandon all knowledge of humanity and attack each other. MOURNER’s song continues and it is revealed that both GENERAL and SOLDIER are standing inches from each other, practically touching; frozen.)
Bring us home
Every single stone will fall
We will never walk alone
Only you can bring us home…
(all exit.)
