after successfully changing into the new clothes pidge had bought for him, keith was more comfortable. as comfortable as you can be when you suddenly go on your cycle after months of not having it. he tried not to let it faze him, and it worked. god bless self control.
lance, surprisingly, did not notice that the korean had changed his clothes. he obviously didn't care, or just didn't want to ask the other about it. maybe lance was too busy doing his job instead of paying attention to other people. the last one was deemed unlikely by pidge, though.
the three friends sat together on one of the benches outside of the café now that lance has gotten off his shift. keith couldn't help but stare at lance's frame and body.
it wasn't anything sexual, actually. it was just that lance looked unhealthy. like he wasn't eating enough. out of his work uniform, his form seemed like hell. his beautiful brown skin wrapped tightly around his bones, making him look like a walking skeleton, keith had noted. with an untouched milkshake in hand, he looked up and extended his arm to lance.
"you look hungry. do you want some?" keith offered, raising the hand holding the cup up to lance's face, "i don't really need this. you can have it if you want."
lance looked disturbed by the drink for a mere millisecond before scoffing, "hungry? baby, i'm fuller than ever! if you don't want it, you can throw it away, mullet."
keith ignored the insult to his hairstyle and looked away, eyeing the jewelry shop in the distance. when is hunk and allura going to come back? sure, the foreign student took forever to 'look around' whenever the squad goes shopping, but this was simply too long. he took a sip of the shake and stuck his tongue out in silent disgust. it was way too sweet for him. but keith decided he couldn't complain since pidge paid it for him.
the loud, piercing noise that both keith and lance recognized has pidge's ringtone rang out for a total of five seconds before it was answered. after moments of conversing with whoever that called them, pidge hung up and sighed rambunctiously.
"shiro called," they told the others, "asked me to come over to help out with tonight's sleepover. it's gonna be big since it's allura's first one. smell ya later at shiro's house."
before the two could complain to pidge, they took their bag and sashayed out of sight. if shiro needed help, why didn't he ask keith instead? he's not going to pick up a fuss about something like that, but he sure was curious.
his thoughts were interrupted by a loud, disastisfied moan that came from lance.
"i asked the manager to get off early just to talk to pidge!" he protested, stretching out his skinny arms, "can't believe it was a waste. guess i gotta spend time with you and your stupid mullet now."
"okay, you can call me stupid, but don't say anything about my hair!" keith aggressively hollered, pointing an accusing finger right at lance's face, "also, didn't you say you got off shift earlier? what's this about asking the manager?"
lance shrugged and got up, slowly walking in a direction with his arms behind his head. this caused keith to also stand up, trailing behind.
"pidge is a pretty great friend," the hispanic uttered, "we barely talk because of our diverse schedule. it'd be a waste not to leave early to talk to her."
keith visibly cringed and stopped dead in his track, "they."
"huh?"
"i said," he picked up his pace once more, "pidge is a they. they hate it when people use female pronouns."
both lance and keith kept walking until they reached the barren parking lot, which was slowly filling up with all sorts of vehicles. lance sat down at the curb of the sidewalk, keith standing inert next to him.
"i don't see much of a difference." he hissed in a soft tone, "pronouns are pronouns. people are people... it doesn't change anything."
Oh. Oh.
lance was one of those types of people. that would sort of explain why pidge never said anything about their pronouns to lance. keith get it. he used to be like that, too. until... yeah.
"i see what you're trying to say..." keith exhaled ringingly loud, "so... how long have you guys been friends?"
shit, that's the most cliché question he could've asked in his situation. with a mental punch to his own face, keith rejected all eye contact with lance that could've been made if he stared for a second longer.
he wiggled his shoulders a bit, "few years. met 'em in middle school but got to know them better in the 10th grade."
silence.
keith was absolutely fine with ending his noisy day with peace and tranquility. except, of course, the conclusion of the day he had in mind was ruined when a run-down car speeded down the parking on and turned to them with a loud screech!
the window rolled down to reveal an older looking teenager, with the same beautiful brown skin and eyes as lance's. a mexican song keith couldn't quite identify blasted from the radio, almost shaking the road and everyone on it. the girl pointed for lance to get in.
he got up and pulled gently at the car handle, looking over his shoulders at keith.
"you can come with us if you want." lance muttered, scratching the back of his neck, "my hermana will drop you off at shiro's."
keith nodded and followed the other inside the car, carefully putting on his seatbelt. he greeted lance's sister, but his words were drowned out by the radio. lance sighed, got up, and turned the volume down by a few ticks.
"hey!" lance shouted rudely at his sister, "¿quieres ir sordo?"
she sighed and pressed a button to turn the music completely off, earning a relieved sigh from Keith. lance's sister finally noticed keith strapped in to the seat and raised an eyebrow. she glared at lance jokingly through the mirror above as she began driving down the road.
"eh, lance brought home a novio for mamá? that's pretty rare!" she laughed with eccentricity and nodded her head in keith's direction, "my name is rosalina. i'm no taxi, but where to, pretty boy?"
keith noticed the huge accent rosalina had that lance didn't. maybe he spent too much time around other races and lost his accent overtime. it didn't matter at the moment.
"to shiro's house, please."
