Phil...?

Dan-
It has been three months after Phil had left him to fly over sea. Dan felt like his heart had shattered into 11532 pieces (don't ask), and one had gotten lost because he felt incomplete. Without Phil he ceased to be. Without Phil he was alone.

Phil-
I couldn't concentrate at all; not without Dan. I didn't acknowledge the sergeants screaming at me or the coldness of the water as he lay in it. He just felt numb. Everyonw has noticed, all asking him if he was okay concern drowning their words. All he replied with was a shrug - he never confirmed nor denied if he was okay because whatever he chose would be a lie. He felt nothing. They dropped the subject after that and he was thankful, we'll except for when he was called into his sergeant's office.

S- "soldier 384 take a seat!"
"I'm sure you know why you're here"

P- "not really no" he replied nonchalantly. Normally a well built guy shouting at him would terrify him into silence but after leaving Dan he didn't care anymore"

S- "Excuse me?"

P- "You're excused"

S- "You have 10 seconds to explain yourself before I make sure you won't be able to mouthy to anyone again"
"DO YOU HEAR ME NUMBER 384?!"

P- "go ahead. I don't really care tbh"

S- "what going on?" he asked his voice much more soothing.

P- "nothing...I'm fine.."

S- "Bullshit. Tell me the real reason 384"

P- "there is no reason"

S- "if you say so.... Let's talk about that ring you're wearing, even though all jewellery is prohibited. What makes you such a special snowflake?"

P- "........"

S- "since you 'don't care' how about I take that for safe keeping..?" in response to this Phil flinched and reached out towards his ring - as if protecting it.

Gift from a girlfriend?.....or boyfriend?"

P- "....boyfriend..." he whispered barely audibly.

S- "so what happened..?"

P- "...he proposed"

S- "congratulations"

P- "...but I said no.... Because I had to come here.... I had to leave the love of my life to come here." his eyes filled with tears but he fought to restrain them.

S- "I'm so sorry... I understand what you're going through.... I was in a similar situation when I was younger, we were so in love"

P- "what happened...?"

S- "I ran away from the military to be with him. We got married and even adopted a child. But.... Something happened - he was driving our daughter home from school and... there was a crash. They both died that day. I lost everything that day. Now I'm back here."

P- "I'm so so sorry.." it was only now that he noticed the silver band encasing his finger and the picture of him with another guy holding a little girl.

S- "It's in the past now. I don't want the same to happen to you Phil. Spend as much time as you can with the people you love because soon they will be gone forever."

P- "I wish I could but the only person I will ever love is thousands of miles away and I'm stuck here."

S- "No you're not. I'm relieving you of your duties and you are to be transported back home immediately. Understood?"

P- "Y-yes thank you so much."

S- "make the most of every moment before it all ends."

P- "I will"
