Chapter Two
The human world has changed since I've last been here. The dirt roads have been replaced by slabs of stone with yellow lines and the small huts and lodges that were used for businesses and homes were gone and towering walls stood tall in its place but the most prominent difference from the past was the steel machine on wheels. What happened to simple horse drawn carriages? These thing made crossing from one side of the street to another a hazard, trust me.
We've been here here for only five minutes and Rukon has almost been hit twenty times! Its just bloody annoying. Kampala pulled Rukon out of the way of another machine on wheels. "OK next time you're dead," she growled before walking away. As we walked I noticed people looking at us weirdly and some were whispering.
Why are they staring at us? I thought after a while. Eh, what do I care. They aren't my problem.
I heard Wolfsbane whistle behind us. "They're acting like they've never seen an Arcane before,"
"Maybe they haven't," said Kampala calmly, while looking around. She turned and look at our groups. After a second she said. "Maybe its our clothing?"
What we were wearing was traditional clothing for traveling. It only covered our chest and butt leaving our legs and arms free to move about. On our waist was a belt that held a few of our weapons. I opened my mouth to object just as two men in blue uniforms walked toward us."Umm, ma'am can you and your friends show us your license," The taller one ordered.
"What's a licence?" asked Rukon, holding up a hand. "Stop the funny business," said the other man. "You know what it is," he said stepping forward to touch Rukon on the shoulder and OH what a bad move it was. In a second flat she had the man hanging by the front of his shirt.
"Watch what you touch bub," she growled. His face was ashen white as he stared down at her. "Hey put him down," yelled the other man. By now a crowd was forming and little rectangle boxes that the humans held were flashing at us.
We were attracting to much attention. "Kampala, put him down," I ordered. Kampala growled softly as she dropped him. He hit the floor hard and scrambled frantically to get away from her. "Can we leave please?" asked Rukon backing away from the fight, tripping over the side of the curb. I opened my mouth to agree when a siren started to blare going wee -ooh wee- ooh.
"What is that horrific sound," asked Wolfsbane, covering her sensitive ears. "I don't know," I replied, as a bunch of steel on wheels with flashing lights on top came careening around the corner trapping us against the wall in a semicircle. Humans poured our of the machine and pointed guns at us. "Drop your weapons and put your hands up in the air," said a voice.
"Should we or should we not, that is the question," said Wolfsbane.
"Dang, I don't know," said Kampala. "I just wish they'd leave us alone,"
"What a pain," I muttered. " I didn't even want to come to here in the first place,"
"I repeat," said the voice loudly. "Put your weapons down and surrender!"
"Quiet," yelled Wolfsbane. "We are having a conversation over here," She turned back to us and looked exasperated. "Do these scum have any manners?"
"Should we cooperate," asked Kampala, ignoring Wolfsbane's comment. "Or kill," finished Wolfsbane.
"Cant we all just get along," whined Rukon, still laying on the floor.
"No," answered Kampala. "It's kill or be killed. That's the law of the world,"
"Our world," argued Rukon. "Not this one,"
I could tell that Kampala was losing it. Veins were beginning to pop on her head and her eyes had a dangerous glint in them. "Ladies," the voice said.
"What!" screamed Kampala turning around. The humans jumped back in either surprise or fear upon seeing Kampala's burning eyes.
"Um," said the voice loosing power. "Put your weapons down or we'll shoot,"
"Shoot what?" I heard Rukon whisper before Wolfsbane shushed her.
"Then come on," said Kampala. "Come and try to hit my butt!"
The humans looked taken back by her aggressive advances to scared to approach her but Kampala wasn't done. "Come you stupid cowards and get a taste of defeat as I tear your flesh from your bones with my bare hand!"
Kampala was going too far. It was about time I stepped in, I figured, "Kampala calm down," She ignored me and continued to taunt the humans."Kampala," I said warningly. Still no response. I groaned when I realized that force was the only option here. What a pain.
I unsheathed the scythe that was on my back and approached Kampala and the humans.
"Woman, Stop!" I vaguely heard the voice but Kampala had disobeyed her ruler and there would be consequences. I raised my scythe when a bang sounded in the air and a pain exuded from my arm. I lowered my arm to see a dart with a fluffy end attached sticking to my arm. I pulled the dart out with my free hand.
I looked at the dart closely and turned to look at Wolfsbane when dizziness swirled my vision and muddled my concentration. It was a weird sensation as if my feet weren't actually touching the ground. It made my body feel heavy and thoughts seem didn't travel through myself. All I truly knew was that I wanted, no I needed, to sleep. I started to fall. I heard Wolfsbane and Rukon yelling behind me and then my mind went blank.
