The year was 2002, and it was my first day of elementary school. Unlike most kids, I was excited to be starting school. I was happy to meet new people and to learn. This would eventually change, but for the time being, I was optimistic. I walked into class to see that all the other students were already in their seats and all looking ahead at the teacher at the front of the classroom with looks of fear on their faces. There was only one empty seat, beside a boy, so I sat down. The teacher at the front of the classroom began to speak.
"Welcome to Duc D'anville Elementary School, students! My name is Mrs.Walker, are you all excited to finally be starting school?"
"No!" Said just about every student in the class. Everyone except for me and the boy I sat next to. The first day of school and already I felt like I didn't fit in. Atleast I wasn't alone. The boy sitting beside me was smiling and seemed very happy to be there.
Mrs.Walker told us that everyone in the room would take turns standing up and telling everyone in the class our names. I was the fifth kid to stand up.
"Michael" I said.
"Nice to meet you Michael" Mrs.Walker replied, with a friendly smile on her face.
The boy sitting beside me was next to go. He was reluctant to stand up at first but he eventually did with encouragement from Mrs.Walker.
"Hi, my name is Logan" He said in a whispered voice.
"What a lovely name" said Mrs.Walker, again with that friendly smile on her face. Although after seeing it ten times it began to seem rather creepy.
After about half an hour, the whole class had stood up and announced their names to the class. She went on to tell us about what we would be covering in the school year. I wasn't paying attention though. I was too busy counting down the minutes until recess. Even on my first day I was eager to go outside and have fun. Finally after another ten minutes, the recess bell rang. I walked outside towards the playground where I saw Logan playing on the swings. I walked up to him and greeted him.
"Hi, I'm Michael, can I play on the swings with you?" I said nervously, afraid he would say no.
"Sure! My name's Logan, you are the person who sat beside me in class right?" Logan said, with much more confidence than in the classroom.
"Yup!" I said as I climbed onto the swing next to the one Logan was using.
Logan and I stayed on the swings talking to each other all recess. Going to the swings for recess became a trend and we would do it everyday. I did not know it at the time, but meeting Logan that day would turn out to be one of the most important moments of my life.
