The major and his men were knocked down of their feet when the ship came out the FTL. The ship was in pretty bad shape. Parts of the ship was inaccessible and they had to constantly find ways around obstacles.
The major asked his technician, "Jim, I need more intel on what is going on around the ship. Can you get me any data?"
Jim checked his arm hologram for details on the ship. He had connected the ships internal diagnostics from the bridge to his own operating system to keep watch on the ships systems.
"Sorry John, can't give you much data that is useful. Most of the data is rather basic diagnostics on the ships systems. I can see what works and what not but I do not have access to the ships internal data, sensors or diagnostics. The captain didn't give me that much privileges. Besides with the ships systems being hacked there isn't much data available that is reliable," Jim said.
"Understandable, I would do the same in the captain's position."
John turned around and stared into empty space as he usually did when he was thinking a solution to a problem.
"I need to data Jim. I need to know the quickest route to the med bay and avoid possible fatal locations on the ship. Not to mention that we are on a prison ship. We don't know if the lower decks are compromised," John said.
"In that case with your permission let me do my magic and crack the ships security system to get access to more data. I can use some bots I've made to harvest data from the ships sensors, logs and diagnostics to create a better picture on the ships status. Maybe I'll even get a glimpse on what or who is causing the systems failures on the ship."
"Consider it granted. Get going on it immediately."
"Roger that John. I'll need access to one of the ships computer consoles." Jim pointed in the direction behind John and said, "That over there should do it."
They moved towards the end of the corridor which had a computer console. Jim opened some panels on the console, took out his own computer and plugged it in to a port he made in the consoles back panel.
John scratched his head and leaned in to Jim, "Jim, you still carrying that thing around? When are going to move to something from this decade? You do know that for a techie you are a bit too fond for old tech..."
"Hey, she maybe old but we got history. Besides she has quite punch in her, I've taken good care of her over the years. I can guarantee that you won't find anything better, not even in ranks of our benevolent contractor and his goons. Those guys rely too much on new gizmos and too little on what really matters," Jim said.
"And what is that which matters?"
"Well, you got to have some love for this stuff but you must also be ready to hate this stuff too. I'll will keep your mind fresh. Don't just take up any toy and newest software that's thrown at you. You got to have a mind that can question things, otherwise how the hell will you know what is what."
Alexa their medic and marksman joined in the conversation, "Wow, that is awfully philosophical for a techie Jim."
John had a grin on his face, Alexa had one also.
"I have to agree with Alexa Jim," John said.
Jim was just squinting his eyes and giving a cocky smile, he said, "Well John, you haven't heard the best part yet. You see, most people think that to hack into systems you have to find their weakness. Mostly that is true but the truth is that like with most things in life the real weakness is in the things which people consider as strengths. Strengths are the parts that are most likely eventually going to be neglected. You might either have too much or too little focus on strengths. Find the strength of something or someone and you will find a weakness..."
