I lied. I did look back. But it's only a small peek. I couldn't resist it!
And so I did.
But the moment I did that, looking back at him, something else surprised me to the core.
He was staring at me.
I just stood there frozen, my legs rooted to the ground like its being chained by an invisible rope. I couldn't move my legs no matter how hard I commanded it to. We locked gazes at each other.
There's an intensity in his eyes that I never seen before, but I recognized it. I knew it all too well, because I saw that look on myself too.
Longing.
My heart is pounding excessively hard and I could feel a traitorous blush slowly creeping up to my cheeks, so I averted my gaze. Then the moment was gone. I had to slap my cheeks twice, just to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
I didn't dare to look back again.
Maybe he's looking at someone else behind me and I just got in the way. That makes sense. I had to destroy all the possible thoughts of him ever wanting me like I wanted him. It's just impossible.
I walked away from the hallway as fast as I could. I reached the classroom within minutes and some students were already in their seats, chatting and laughing with each other. I went to my seat beside the window and sat down.
Emily had the same class too, but she wasn't here yet. I decided to revise the subject before we start our lesson and flipped open my thick book of Physics. At least this can distract me for a while.
"Cara!"
I looked up and saw Emily greeting me with a big smile. I hummed a response and returned back to my book. Then a hand slammed onto my book, covering the pages so that I can't read.
"Em!" I gasped out.
She glared and then pouted at me. "Don't ignore me! We just finished our exam last week. You can't be learning again."
"I can and I will. It's senior year, Em! Don't forget we'll have our finals in-"
"-eight months. I know that, but it's still a long time until our final exam. You will have the time to learn. Just live a little!"
I sighed exasperatedly and looked at her. "Then what do you suggest I do?"
Emily gave me a triumph smile that makes me feel slightly on edge.
"I was hoping you would ask that."
********************
"No."
"Cara!"
"Nope."
"Please?"
"No way!" I glared at Emily pointedly and looked away from her. Not a chance. She had just suggested the most absurd, ridiculous idea I have ever heard in my life. I never even imagined myself to agree to it. That is the last thing I would ever agree to in a thousand years.
"It's good for the both of us! Look, we can learn to be tough and defend ourselves, and think of how bad ass we'd be!" She ranted on. "Also, the guys. Imagine all the view we can get."
She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.
"You're such a pervert!" I couldn't help but laughed out.
"Please, please, please!" She pleaded, clasping her hands in front of me.
I gave her a long, hard stare, then sighed. Maybe I should try it out. How bad could it be?
"Fine. Let's sign up for self-defense classes."
*******************
Amber choked on her half-chewed burger and reached out for a glass of water. I handed it to her and she quickly gulped down the water.
"What?!"
I winced. "Emily kinda got me into joining self-defense classes."
"You? Self-defense?!" Her eyes bugged out.
"Yep."
Then she burst into laughter.
While she was still laughing like a hyena with her hands clutching her belly, I stared at her, slightly offended. Maybe I made the wrong choice listening to Emily.
"Are you done?" I glared at her.
"Oh my goodness, I think I have cramps from laughing this much." She said, leaning at the cafeteria table while grinning at me.
Its break time. We sat at our table in the cafeteria while waiting for Emily. She was late today. Usually she was one of the first to reach here.
"What's so funny about it?" I demanded.
She smirked at me slowly. "Cara, look at yourself. You look like you're gonna break if I touch you. I can't even imagine you hurting anyone."
I look at my slender and petite body and huffed at her, feeling insulted.
"Wait till I become stronger, Amber. I will punch you and let you feel the power of my fist!" I declared, shaking my fists in front of her face.
She just looked at me amusingly.
"Cute, Cara. Cute." She smiled.
That just made me more determined to join the self-defense class and prove myself to her that I'm not weak. My resolve fueled me to the point I'm more than eager to sign up my name now.
I will show Amber and prove it to her that I'm stronger than I look.
