The roar of the motor from outside of the truck was extremely loud. I was terrified, not being able to speak. I thought I was going to die a minute ago, and here I was, alive and with Mark. The guy we were looking for had to save my arse.
I had actually never thought we'd never find Mark and the others, and I couldn't bring myself to tell Jack this. Only would have probably taken a miracle to find them and meet up. Yet, here I was and there he was, laugh and talking with an overjoyed Sean.
I look up for a glimpse to see who else was on the truck bed with me. It seemed that MatPat was next to me, covered in sweat. I had known Matt of off YouTube, constantly obsessing over his amazing theories. I personally think he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. I look out to the back of the bed, only seeing three zombies still chasing us.
I sigh shakily, a drop of something wet falling onto my face. I wipe my face, not even realizing that I had been crying. 'Damnit!' I think. 'I could have been with Stephanie again... Why couldn't they have left me?'
I hear Matt's voice echo a bit; he was saying "Heya! So... what's your name?" He taps my shoulder, but I lower my head farther down, squinting my eyes. Visions of Stephanie wouldn't go away. I ignore Matt.
"Are you bitten?" He asks cautiously. I just shake my head no. My breathing gets shakier, my dead girlfriend not leaving my mind. I cry silently, missing the comforting arms she warped around me at the best times. Her kiss, her voice, her smell... all fading away into memories. I look up, letting my tear streaked face be seen. I blink a few times to get rid of the blurriness. I look at Matt and tremble, stuttering out quietly, "Y-you should have j-just left me there... Shouldn't have had Mark risk his life for me..."
Matt must have heard me and states, "Hey! Everyone's life is worth it." He puts his hands on my shoulders, making me make eye contact with his serious brown eyes. I gasp as I hear those few words. No, this can't be happening. Stephanie? Nonononono... "No!" I shout, my hands coming up to my face, squeezing my head. "Nononono..." I repeat, hands and head buried back into my legs, rocking back and forth.
Matt started touching me, shaking me even. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy. I hear murmurs of concern across from me; it's probably just Dan and Phil. Matt talks hurriedly. "Are you okay? Did we leave anyone behind?" He repeated himself over and over again, waiting for a reply I wouldn't give. The only thing I could see was Stephanie, the moments we'd had together up until the last. Of course I knew we didn't leave anyone behind. I just refused to answer.
All of a sudden I hear Matt knocking on the back window, trying to get the mystery driver to stop. I look through the window, only seeing a maroon colored beanie and I couldn't identify them.
My whole body jerks forward as the person starts on the brakes. I hear a female's voice with a heavy Irish accent exclaiming, "Why the bloody hell did we stop?"
I can hear Mark's voice with a hint of confusion, "There's something wrong with the kid. I think we left someone behind-"
"We didn't leave anyone behind," Dan interrupts. "No way. It's just the four of us."
The girl speaks up again, "Then why does he keep sayin' no? Ya know what? I don't care. As long as he's not bitten and no one is left back there it doesn't matter." She says with swagger. "We have to decide where we're going next. Are we going to Wade's to drop these guys off so they can settle in, or are we taking them to the city with us?"
Mark speaks up, "We're already out here, so we might as well head to the city."
"Hey guys! -and girl," Jack smiles at her. "That kid right there," he points to me as I look up at him, not saying anything at all. "His name's Christopher and he lives in that city. All our supplies are there." The beanie girl giggles in a light voice and says, "Good thing we brought my truck!"
I suddenly feel extremely uncomfortable and I crawl over to Jack, kind of hiding behind him. He looks behind to see me, smiling softly. He rubs my shoulders with sympathetic eyes. I whisper in his ear, "It was her." I cry. Jack nods slowly, knowing exactly what I had meant.
"We'll need to make room in the back for all the supplies you probably have, so how 'bout Matt, Mark, and Jack come sit with me in the truck?" Is that a blush I see? And she knows Jack's name... Matt's face immediately brightens up and he shouts "Shotgun!" He jumps right off and bolts to the passenger door.
I hear Mark sigh and say, "Ah, well, s'your turn this time." He smiles and gets off the truck, trying to pull Jack along with him. I, though, had a firm grip on Jack's wrist, not being able to let him go. Jack looks back at me confused and tells Mark to "just go and he'll be with him soon." His eyes show concern as he crouches down in front of me.
"What's up," he asks. "Please don't leave me..." I beg quietly. "Hey Chris, it's all okay now. You have Dan and Phil with you, so you won't be alone. And you gotta remember, the whole reason we went out was to look for Mark. I'm finally with him, so please let me go with him," Jack pleads. I nod, but reluctantly. I can never seem to say no to those pale, blue eyes.
I let Jack go to Mark as I crawl over to the boys. Their hands were locked as I sit in front of them, preparing for the questions to come. Phil starts, saying "What...uh, happened exactly, Christopher?" I look down. Should I tell them the past? Or do I brush it off as nothing?
I let my mouth hang open and my mouth grudges. "Well..." I start, "It's complicated." I sigh. Phil lets go of Dan and pulls me into a warm hug as I start sobbing into his shoulder. The truck starts as we head off to the city alive, but I can't say well.
