Chop.

Chop. Chop. Chop. My focus was on the knife as it smacked against the cutting board. Over and over. Through every food it collided.  A clean, chop.  The sounded resonated throughout the emptiness of my abode.
And then another noise enter the picture. The monotonous tapping of my mothers fingers against he phone. And then another sound. The slam of our front door. It echoed.
My fathers face appeared. Flushed. Eyes glassy.
"Lucy dear. We have dinner with the Vanderbilt's tonight. Shouldn't you be getting ready?"  She didn't glance away from her precious phone.
"No. You're going out alone tonight. It'll be like every other night this week then."
That surely made him scoff. "This is the social event of the season. All of our friends will be expecting us. It'd be an embarrassment to the company if we didn't show up."
Her eyes rose from her device, for a split second, as she curved her brow. Then her voice boomed against the walls. "An embarrassment? Huh. To think you've been thinking about embarrassment while running about with your black tramps. That's flabbergasting."  This time their eyes locked. I could feel it. But I didn't look away from the chopping of my knife. Chop, chop, chop.
I didn't look their way, even as their voices rose to calm but venomous shouts. "Now that I think of it, wouldn't that be a brilliant idea? Take one of your whores? Of course that'd be a little embarrassing. Having to pay one of your little girls to attend."
I could feel it. My father glanced my way. I could feel his eyes full of anger towards her, but I didn't feel shame. Chop. Chop.
"I THINK IT WOULD BE BEST IF WE CONTINUED THIS CONVERSATION AFTER DINNER LUCY."
My mothers voice then rose a irritated octave.  My knife came down harder. Sharper. Louder. Chop.
"I think it's EMBARRASSING you have to pay the women. Although, let's be honest with ourselves. NOBODY would be attracted to you. No woman. Even with money involved." Chop chop chop chop chop.
"Lucy. I think it'd be best if you understood that I don't need you. I could easily replace YOU." A cruel laugh escaped her lips. She threw her precious phone to the ground, with a clank. Chop chop.
"YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A LOW LIFE, DRUG ATTIC, HOOKER BUYING PIECE OF SHIT, WITHOUT ME." Chop chop chop chop chop. I didn't look up. I swallowed the lump in my throat. I continued the chopping of my knife like they were invisible. Like I was invisible.
"YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A POOR, SPOILED, IDIOTIC WHORE WITHOUT ME." CHOP.
I gasped as the knife fell to the ground. The blood trickled from my hand. The gash in my finger looked me in the eye. It looked bad. I felt it throb. But I didn't feel any pain. I just saw the blood. Drip, drip, dripping onto the cutting board.
And like that we all snapped out of a trance. Their heavy labored breathes of anger came to a stop. We all closed our eyes and breathed. I reached for a towel to wrap around my hand. My mother picked up her phone. My father checked his watch.
   "We leave in an hour."
    "Alright."
I couldn't look at them as they went their separate ways. I just stared mindlessly at the clean white cloth as it slowly saturated with red. I felt my nerve endings buzzing but I didn't feel any pain. I couldn't. And then I collapsed.

Sincerely, Delilah.
