CHAPTER ONE • LACUNA

I LONG TO HEAR YOUR VOICE,
BUT STILL I MAKE THE CHOICE,
TO BURY MY LOVE,
IN THE MOONDUST

ELA POTTER SAT staring out of a window splattered with raindrops, her chin in her hands as she pondered over what to draw next. The window frame in front of her was wide and painted white, the curtains drawn back so that the gloomy streets of East London could be seen, the cars rumbling around sluggishly, splashing pedestrians with the rainfall that'd collected on the side of the pavement.

And just like that, she had an idea. Ela began to sketch the view, starting with the wide streets and large houses and gradually moving towards the distance. It wasn't her best, but she was bored; her aunt, uncle and their son, Charlie, had gone shopping and left her and her adoptive brother, Reece, at home alone.

Since they couldn't have children, John and Susie Evans had adopted two children; Reece and Ela, although they didn't really have much choice in adopting Ela - they were her only remaining relatives, besides her other aunt and uncle. But six years ago, their dream of having their own child finally came true, and Ela's cousin was born - his name was Charlie, and he was a half-blood wizard, having finally shown evidence of magic; now the growing family consisted of only one muggle - Ela's aunt Susie.

Reece and Ela weren't allowed to go out even if they wanted to in the terrible weather, as they were only eleven and the world was a bad place, especially in the busy city they lived in. And consequently she was bored, having been stuck inside for a week since she left primary school - it was meant to be summer, for God's sake. But the rain kept pouring down relentlessly, and everyone stayed in their houses, willing the bad weather to pass.

So, Ela sat there drawing away to her little heart's content, happily sketching the view in front of her. Her hand was hovering over the pencil tin, a pencil between her thumb and forefinger, when there was a knock on the door.

"Hm?" she hummed absentmindedly, and the door clicked open, a young boy around her age standing in its wake.

She turned around and immediately rolled her eyes. Reece.

Reece was her adoptive brother, whom her parents adopted soon after they'd adopted her. He had dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes - it was obvious they weren't related. Ela had skin just slightly lighter, with green eyes and dark red hair, which seemed to be turning brown slowly as she got older, something she hated - she wished she could hold on to her hair colour, to pin in down in place so that it wouldn't change.

Her brother was probably just there to annoy her. At least he knocked first.

"Someone's at the door," he said, leaning his back against the doorframe and tapping his fingers on the wall.

Ela smiled. "Are you scared?" she laughed, placing her pencil back in the tin.

"No," said Reece defiantly, walking towards her. He narrowed his eyes. "What's that of?" he asked, pointing at her drawing.

"It's the view from the window," she scowled. Their relationship was typical of siblings, always fighting, always teasing and arguing. Reece found some kind of pleasure in tormenting his younger sister; that doesn't mean she didn't retaliate. "If you're not scared, then why don't you open it?"

"I did," Reece muttered, picking up her drawing.

"And?"

"He asked for you," he said simply, examining the drawing. Then, with a little smirk, he placed two fingers at the top as if he were about to rip it in two.
