Levi's PoV
I sat up at the table with abnormal enthusiasm, I mean, it's not exciting, having a bowl of sludge, that your mother calls "porridge" for breakfast, but for some reason, I couldn't wait to finish eating. No
"Someone's happy today! What's going on with you, Levi?" My mother said sarcastically. Pinching at my cheek as I greedily ate as if I were a pig.
"Nothing.. I just can't wait to meet Farlan.. We're going to see Isabel today" I replied, avoiding eye contact and blushing slightly. Only I knew what I really wanted. I wanted to see the girl again, no 'not the girl' Petra. Her name is Petra... I couldn't get the thought of her bright smile and cool amber eyes out of my head, along with her laugh, her laugh could make anyone's day better.
After I finished eating, I ran out of the door, heading my usual way to Farlan's house, it was a short cut, over the rooftops and through the ally, simple. I've been told numerous times by my annoyed neighbours to stop running on their houses, but I never did, and I don't ever plan to..
When I was outside at Farlan's house, I was hesitant to knock, I DID want to go and see Isabel, but at the same time I didn't, she had been getting ill quite a lot recently, and I knew that she was unlikely to get better. Taking a deep sigh, I knocked slowly, a few seconds later, Petra answered the door, she seemed surprised by my presence.
"Uh.. Hi Petra, are you coming with us to see Isabel?" I asked, trying to put on a convincing smile, which made Petra laugh a little.
"They've already left.. They left for the surface a little while ago.." She explained, with a confused look on her face, as if I was SUPPOSED to know what was going on. How could I? My face dropped. How could he just leave me like that? I sighed in disappointment.
"do you wanna hang out, Petra?" I asked nonchalantly, which even I wasn't expecting, I always get a certain feeling that I can't really explain around Petra, I don't know, it's weird.
"Sure I'd love to!" She smiled, stepping out of the door, and struggling to reach the handle. We started to head towards the river that flowed underground, it was one of the best parts about living down here, and again, we just talked for hours, all whilst skipping stones, or the occasional bit of rubble we found on the ground, after that we just decided to walk around the city, I knew it like the back of my hand, every street, ever secret passage way and every house number. We talked about all kinds of stuff, we talked about our future ambitions a bit more, and our families. I really like just doing nothing with her, we could just waste hours talking about something completely useless, and somehow find it the most hilarious thing ever. At one point we walked past the stairway to surface, I saw some sort light in Petra's eyes that I hadn't seen in anyone's eyes before, Maybe she was amazed at the light of the sun? Or maybe she was dreaming to up there.
"I'd love to see the surface one day.." I mentioned, breaking the silence and bringing Petra out of her trance. It was quiet, but I could hear her mumble in agreement, at least, I hoped it was agreement, but then again, what else could it have been? After that, she was pretty blunt and quiet whilst we walked home together. When we reached Farlan's house, he was home. We could tell because his mother was sat on the sofa and a candle was lit in the window to his bedroom.
"Bye, Levi.." Petra said, walking through the door that I had already opened for her.
"See you tomorrow!" I smirked, my smile fading when she didn't reply but instead closed the door. I walked home alone, slowly. I didn't like being on time, it wasn't how i was, and my mother knew that, so she was never surprised if I was about an hour late. I didn't take my usual route, I took the way we walked, so I could remember today all over again. I couldn't wait to see her again tomorrow, maybe then I could show her the hidden passage, or my favourite tunnel circuit, I couldn't wait.
I got home and my parent's were already in bed, but I was no where near tired, so I lit a candle and sat up by the window, just staring at the light of the moon that shone down and flooded the city as if the rain had ran down the steps into our river, and it began to crawl over the edge, weaving in between the messily placed cobbled of the streets.
I stared at the moon for hours before I fell asleep, just imagining wha life up there would be like, I bet the love it, getting to hear, What are they called? Birds? Birds singing every morning as they wake, and seeing the sun shine through their window, and the hospitals are so much better up there, I bet they don't have nearly as many sick people as down here. What I wouldn't give to live up on the surface...
As I woke up the next morning I felt a slight nudge on my shoulder, it was Farlan, he seemed quite upset about something,
"Hey Levi!" He yelled at me, leaning over me as he shook me, "Petra wants to say something to you!" I immediately awoke, as if a second wind had immediately come over me, I didn't bother eating my breakfast, I was in a rush, I needed to know what she had to say.
