"Hey Taehyung?"
"Yeah?"
"Why... Oh, nothing."
"Come on, you can't do that. Now you have to tell me."
"No, nothing. Don't worry about it."
Taehyung laughed lightly. "Just say it. Speak your mind." He preached. Somi hesitated, biting her lip. "It's a weird question," she mumbles. "Well now I'm even more intrigued," he replied as he sat up straight. The two of them were sitting cross legged on the carpeted floor, despite there being multiple seats in the room.
"I was just wondering.. about the question game." Somi said slowly. Taehyung raised an eyebrow. "What about it? You forgot how to play?" He joked. As if. They were both experts at the game at this point. Somi half smiled at his response. "I know it's a game for us to.. get to know each other better. But why do you ask things like my favorite milk flavor? Like, you can't possibly care about my favorite milk flavor," she murmured, hoping she didn't sound like as much of an idiot as she felt.
Taehyung was quiet for a moment, which filled Somi with dread. Good one, Somi, she scolded herself. Now your only friend thinks you're an idiot. "Why wouldn't I care about your favorite milk flavor?" Taehyung suddenly asked, looking at her with genuine curiosity in his eyes. "Because.. well, it's not important, is it?" Somi answered, her voice quiet. He frowned in response. "Why isn't it important?" He asked. It was Somi's turn to frown. "It's just milk, Taehyung," she stated, suddenly realising how ridiculous this discussion was. She felt stupid for bringing it up in the first place.
Taehyung studied her face, not sure how to say what he was thinking. "Yeah, it's just milk. But it's your favorite milk. So of course I care." He explained, not taking his eyes off hers. Somi couldn't look away, either. What the hell does that mean? She asked herself. He's just being nice. This is just a friendship thing, I guess. But why does he keep looking at me like that?
Suddenly Somi had a lot of questions. Lots of questions about Taehyung, what he was thinking. Why did he always look at her like that? Does he look at everyone like that? It seemed... different. Like it was reserved for just her. Is it because he feels bad for her? Since he knows he is her only friend? Is it a look full of pity?
Somi studied Taehyung's eyes carefully. She was very familiar with people looking at her with pity, but his eyes weren't like that. It was full of some sort of intense emotion. She couldn't quite identify it; it was something she had never seen before.
Somi's face suddenly felt hot. She couldn't imagine how long the two of them had been quiet, just examining each others faces, trying to read each other. "I don't understand," she muttered quietly. "I still don't understand. Why you care."
Taehyung sighed, and Somi worried that she was being annoying. She just couldn't bring herself to drop the subject. She was worried that if they stopped talking about this now, they might never talk about it again. It would be buried and forgotten, and for some reason, Somi didn't want that.
"I know a lot of people. I'm friends with a lot of people. You know that, right?" He started, glancing at Somi for confirmation. She nodded, not sure where he was going with this. "You and I have been friends for a couple of weeks now, right?" He looked at her again, she nodded again. "And you and I have hung out almost every day. Right?" Look. Nod. "So I have all these other friends, but I've only been hanging out with you.. Right?" Somi didn't nod this time; she simply looked away and tried to ignore her rapidly increasing heartbeat. Taehyung looked at her wistfully.
"You're special, Somi." He said softly.
Somi froze. She had been listening intently to Taehyung this whole time, so she knew she hadn't misheard him. Her heart was beating so hard she was sure Taehyung could hear it. She felt her cheeks heating up, and the thought of him seeing her red face made her flush even more. She worked up the courage to look at him, and she was immediately glad she did.
Taehyung was gazing at her with the sweetest smile on his face. His usual cheeky grin was great, but it was nothing compared to this. It was genuine, sincere. She couldn't help but smile shyly back at him.
Neither of them knew what to say after that, but it didn't matter. They had realised that they didn't mind the silence. They were comfortable; comfortable with each other.
