Leo turned a full circle. Nothing but sand. Had he known this? He swore it looked just like his dream. Only a whole lot bigger, a whole lot hotter, and a whole lot brighter. Not as windy and much more humid. Leo tugged at his collar as a river of sweat trailed down his chest.
"This can't be normal," Darius said, practically panting. Leo looked back, barely noticing everyone else's sweaty faces. It was too bright to make out who was who. But they were all being cooked alive.
Leo pulled his pack off his shoulders, hoping his mind wasn't crazy. He yanked what was left of his extra sheet out and wrapped it around his head. He was sure it didn't look as neat as Sandra's scarf, but the hood helped a bit. The edges also covered his shoulders.
"Ha!" he heard Law scoff. "You look like a girl! An ugly girl!" Leo took one glance in his general direction and shrugged.
"A much cooler girl. Who isn't going to get toasted," he retorted as he pulled his backpack back on. A few of the boys snickered, but they hesitated to copy him. Then Darius came up with the same headgear.
"Help me get it on smoky here," he said, motioning toward the boy they had rescued. Leo nodded, helping Darius wrap the blanket around the boy's blistering head. As he helped the boy up, Leo smiled at the others boys behind them, doing the same as they were. Law was the only one who refused to consent, simply pulling the blanket over his head and holding it.
"Ok, chicas," he grumbled, trying to save whatever pride he had left. "Let's move." Law started walking in one direction, then stopped. His shoulders sank in frustration.
"Where's north!" Darius grinned at Leo, pulling the weak boy's arm over his shoulders. Leo did the same with the other boy's arm.
"Guy doesn't know general directions whatsoever," Darius commented. Leo looked around the barren desert. If it could be called a desert. They could be standing on the sun and he wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
"Where is north?" Leo asked.
"I'm going to be Thanksgiving dinner if you guys don't figure out where we gotta go soon!" Law screamed, flinging his hands into the air. Darius slowly looked up, squinting very hard. Leo tried to see, but his eyes started to burn. The sweat dripping into his eyes didn't help either.
"You're going the right way!" Darius shouted. Law seemed to nod, moving forward once again. Everyone followed, Darius and Leo dragging the sphere-victim with them. It wasn't until their eyes really started to adjust that they started running.
"I see ghosts!" Ted screamed from behind. Leo shook his head in amusement.
"You have done terrible things, young man," Leo said in a creepy and booming voice. Ted laughed hysterically, faking screaming intermittently. Darius was chuckling beside him.
"I see a city!" Ted yelled at the top of his lungs. Leo was sure his throat would be sore after this.
"Stay away! I'm haunting it!" Darius laughed. Ted didn't say a thing. He came up beside Leo, who was laughing at Darius. When he noticed the boy's face, he stopped chuckling. Ted was being serious.
